    Hello,

I just got my Inspiron 6000 today and I'm having problems configuring the Wireless 2915 with a D-Link DWL-G700AP Wireless Access Point.

When I go to my Network connections it says that the 2915 is connected but when I open Internet Explorer I can't connect to the web.

When I initially configured the D-Link I set it for 64 bit encryption and then reset it after I had this problem and still no solution.

    FYI - I'm using a Linksys router BEFSR41

    Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

Ok, I've played around with it some more and discovered that the connection I was making was with someone elses wireless connection? When I unpluged my WAP I was still able to connect with that unsecured wireless connection.

My problem now is that I'm unable to connect to my WAP using the IP 192.168.0.50 which is need to configure it. What's confusing, is that I was able to do it before? I've restored my computer a few times with no success.

Hopefully this makes sense to someone?

Can you connect to the internet threw you AP when physically connected?

I would change your settings to obtain an IP from the DHCP server.

Have you checked the connection tab in IE. In IE: Tools > Internet Options > Connection Tab. Make sure that Never dial a connection is marked. Then try the setup button at the top. Go threw the wizzard and configure for LAN. Sometimes that will do the trick.

Reset your AP and try to connect with wireless. After that works then set up WPA with EAS and have a key longer than 28. Make sure your AP has the latest firmware. Always make only one change at a time. That way you know what the problem is.

Go into wireless properties and change your preferred networks under the Wireless Networks tab.

Hopefully one of these tips will do the trick.

    Thanks for responding Bugmenot.

I ran the setup like you suggested and I'm able to connect to my AP with no problem. My problem now is (and probably has been this whole time) is that my AP is not connecting to the internet. So I think the problem my be configuring the D-Link AP with the Linksys router?

I should also note that I downloaded the latest firmware(wired) but I'm unable to install it on the AP? When I click apply it just sends me to an error page on Internet Explorer (http://192.168.0.50/upgrade.cgi) The page cannot be found

DHCP is currently disabled, so I'm not sure how I would go about changing that and what I should change it too?

    Thanks for you Help!

YES!!! I went into Wireless Network Connection Properties and changed the Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)to Obtain an IP address automatically and now I'm for the first time in my life wirelessly connected to the internet. Sweet!! No where in the D-Link instructions did it tell me to do this, so I'm a little confused about how and why it's working. Does this have to do with ISP (cox)?

Now, what steps do I need to take to make sure my connection is secure? I set up 128 WEP encryption but how do I know it's doing its job?

You can tell if wep is on if you search for networks with XPs wireless program. It will not let you connect with out the key. If you can, run WPA with AES and have the key longer than 28 characters. WPA is more secure than WEP.

    Thanks bugmenot!

I wasn't even aware I could do the WPA. Now that I've got all that set up, I need to decide if I'm going to do the reformat. I'm a little concerned that I'll screw things up.

I would reformat. It is not hard to do. You will need to change the boot order for the CD drive to boot first. Just hit F2 at start up and it will bring you into the bios. Search this forum for detailed directions or google.
