I have read posts about fans and cooling on the i6000. My new one is VERY quiet.. to the point of not sure if it's running? Several posts cited the temperature theirs was running at and I wonder how do I find the temp. on mine? Are these fans adjustable?

The Pentium M runs pretty cool, so I wouldn't be surprised if the fans weren't on. The BIOS controls the fans; if it feels that it doesn't need the fan to expel heat, it won't turn them on. But, they will go on if you do something CPU intensive, like games or encoding.
The fans arent adjustable unless you find a third party program. I don't see any need to control the fans on any notebook; I don't see why you'd want to.
Best to let the BIOS control the fans. -

6000 fans are always on, they have a setting of low or high.
fn+z i believe cycles the fan speed.
fangui will give you control over the fans if u so desire. -
Just got my 6000 and so far I like it alot. The only thing I have noticed, besides the fan is always on but pretty quiet anyway, is a some vibration I feel from the fan under the palm rests. I'm just wondering if it's just normal to feel some slight vibration? Also, when the lcd screen is open the bottom of the laptop has a little twist in it so that the front left foot pad doesn't quite sit on the desk like the others without pressure or weight from my hands using the keyboard. Might be reason for some vibration? It's not really really bothersome, but I thought it was worth asking about...

are you saying that it doesn't sit flat? if not, are you sure it's not the surface you are using it on? try it out on different desks or countertops, etc. you may be surprised at how uneven a table can be (my friend freaked out when her new powerbook was uneven, but it turned out to the be the kitchen table).
anyways, if you determine that it's the laptop that is uneven, i would return it. it should sit 100% flat, no question. -
That's what I mean, when the screen is open it does not sit flat. It does not matter what table it's sitting on (I've tried several). I was thinking that this was not right and may be contributing to the vibration issue. Thanks.
I was afraid of that, now I hope that Dell will handle the return satisfactorily (I just got the thing last week!). I really like the notebook - do you think that I would be alright trying another 6000 or maybe get a D810 instead to hedge my bet on the quality issue (of course, that means more money, too)? -
if you're in the 21 day period, dell will replace your notebook with a new one. it's up to you if you want the 810. i have a 6000 and it's perfect all around. your choice.

Should I expect to pay return shipping for a defective unit? Also, do they just replace this unit no charge, or do I return the unit an order another one (they happen to be about $50 cheaper this week anyway)? Thanks for all the advice...

no charge for the return. they build and send you a new one. you put the old one in the box the new one was sent in. stick the return label on the box and call dhl/ups/usps/whoever to come pick it up.
easy as pie -
not sure... actually, i just played with it and it wo'nt cycle. all i can get it to do is drop from high to low setting, hitting it again won't cycle it back to high.
weird.
