DLA was pretty bad. After losing 1 in 3 discs and a considerable amount of data I finally figured out that I didn't need it and could get by otherwise.

On a positive note, my I9300 burner has been very satisfactory burning CDs and +/-R DVD5s.

However, I have just produced number 7 coaster (7 dual layer DVD burn failures) of 7 attempts and I am wondering what is going on here. Since I started keeping the logs it seems that I am getting write errors near the DL boundary consistently.

I wonder if other 9300 owners who use the DVD Burner (DW56a - OEM LiteOn 852) could comment on their successes or failures with Dual Layers on this burner? Have you suffered as miserably as I? Did u overcome? How? If you have been successful then what type of discs do you use and what burning software do u recommend?

If you're still under warranty, contact Dell for a replacement asap. I've had a few drives fail on me in the past, at first they might only exibit annoying tendancies but I find they usually go down hill pretty quickly.

My Inspiron 9300 shipped with a defective Sony DW-D56A DVD Burner. After burning a series of coasters (CDs & DVDs) I got increasingly frustrated with it's inability to read dics of any format consistantly. I decided to contact Dell Support by phone, after getting over the initial language barrier of how to spell my name and address, I discussed a replacement with the support tech. As he said, two days later a new NEC ND 6650A DVD Burner arrived at my door.

Packet writing software like DLA is very flakey. I wouldn't trust any of my data on it. Taiyo Yudens are considered to be the best blank DVDs. Verbatims for dual layer.

I must say that I also experience the reading/playing of CD/DVDs inconsistently with this drive, but I found one software that seems to handle most DVDs, at least, consistently.

It looks like the NEC drive would be faster. I was getting to like having all the LiteOn utilities I downloaded and am getting used to for the Sony. Does NEC have just about the same available around?
