The dvd burner in the 9300 is suppose to burn both dvd+r/rw and dvd-r/rw. Using nero I can only get mine to burn on - media. If I use + media it spits the disk out and says please put in a - media.

What burner does it say it is in device manager? Try some different discs. Update the firmware if possible. See if you can find the supported media list meaning the media that the manufacturer says will work with the drive. Good Luck.

Well even neros info program says that it should burn dvd+ media. tried a bunch of media including maxel, it might be nero but more probably a bad drive. I was wondering if anyone else with this computer has seen this problem.

it is a sony dw-d56a a dual format drive. I think when all is said and done that the drive is probably rejecting the media for some reason.[ :(]

Is Nero the software that came with the drive? I have seen a couple of instances where Nero did not work a drive. What is says on the the outside to the box does not indicate who made the discs or whether they are any good. You can use DVD Identifier to find out what they are:

    http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi Chemical, RicohJapan and Sony are considered amongst the better ones. Could also update ide drivers. They can sometimes cause problems, but it is probably a bad drive. Good Luck.

Well that was kind if interesting. It says that there is no supported drive. Nero sees the drive and knows its features.

Interesting reading. In the end it seems to say that for the drive dell is shipping that the firmware in the drive is the best one. I am waiting to see what nero says. I have not reinstalled the software I got with the notebook to see if it works or not yet. If nero says nothing I probably will try that, If that also don't work I will get dell to send me another drive, they just pop in with one screw.

I assume it should work with the software they send.

Yea long ago. Nero generally is the most reliable program. I am going to give them a chance to tell me if they think the problem is on their end.

I have the Sony DW-D56A and I AM able to burn Memorex DVD+RW at 4x speed.

I can burn certain brands of -R, +R, and -RW discs at 4x, while other brands, though rated 4X and above, can only be burned at 2x.

I have yet to find a brand of disc that burns at 8x on this drive. The people here experienced the same thing: http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=67861&highlight=dvd

The drive does read DVDs at 8x speed. I checked it with CDSpeed: http://www.cdspeed2000.com

In my case nero says that the media type is unsupported at all. I have not tried the Dell supplied stuff yet. I am hoping that nero comes through with some sort of fix. I am not all that troubled with the speed, right now I can't even erase a +rw much less write to it.

You need to try burning with another software, just to see whether Nero or the drive is the culprit.

Try burning with CDSpeed (http://www.cdspeed2000.com). It lets you do a test burn and measure the write speed. It can also erase a disc. If it works, then Nero is the problem. If it doesn't, chances are good that your drive is faulty.

If you have an ISO image file to burn, you can use DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com) to burn it.

    Both tools are freewares.

You can, of course, also try Sonic RecordNow! 7.0 that comes with your 9300.

I already tried with the latest dvddecrypter and it works, must be nero. I never had any luck with anything made by sonic so I uninstalled it. I may be forced back to something like that if nero never manages to fix the big.

I would probably look for some replacement drive rather than run that thing.
