    Hi,

I have had my fantastic Inspiron 9400 for a couple of months now, and recently added a Western Digital 250 Gb 'Media Center' External hard drive through the USB.

Unfortunately, what was a rare occurrence before - the Blue Screen of Death is now almost a daily occurrence...

Is this more likely because of the new USB Hard Drive, or could it be that the original problems were caused by a possibly defective 7800 Go and now it's getting worse?

I prefer to keep the external hard-drive, as I can't imagine that this would be crashing a brand new pc ...

How can I run the Diagnostics to see what's wrong? Because if it's a defective 7800 Go then I obviously have to call Dell and get it upgraded to a 7900 Go or change the laptop (don't want a downgraded card and a refund that takes forever)!

thanks for any advice or help

    Philip

Tell us what you see off the blue screen. The driver that caused the problem should be shown before the ram dump sequence.

On the external hard drive did it come formated as FAT or NTS , if FAT you will have to reformat it as the same NTS as is on youre pc hard drive. Whenever you defrag youre pc also defrag youre external drive.I have found this to help me get along w/ my external hard drive to stop it from BSOD and outright freezing up my pc.If this does not help click on link below , it is a tech help gaming link for solving BSOD problems for pc under max. usage and should help , since all other suggestions from non gaming sites allways rehashed the same rhetoric , (newest drivers , newest hardware , defragging , excess files etc.)this site should be a little of more realistic help (even if it is a FEAR site.)

ok, will look more carefully next time and report back..

Is there a chance that this could be because the files I'm copying may be >32Gb and the hard drive is formatted to FAT32?

probably this evening it will happen again and I'll be able to tell more.

Is my laptop (Windows Media Center Edition 2005) likely to be Fat32 or NTFS as delivered by Dell?

    thanks

Hi, it happened again, and it said something like:

    MULTIPLE_IRP_REQUESTS

or similar ... could that be the USB Hard drive?

I have now reformatted it to NTFS and checked it for erros (3 hours work...) but what can I do if it keeps happening - how do I ensure I have the latest drivers?

thanks for all you advice and help

Are you using an external mouse? I'm getting the same thing. The Dell tech that I have on the line says it is pointing to my mouse. So I'm not going to use my external mouse for a few days and see if the blue screen of death comes back.

MULTIPLE_IRP_REQUESTS usually points to a USB problem. Do you have any other USB devices?

Interesting. My 1505 was giving me multiple IRP requests and I was using a mouse with USB wireless adapter. Haven't had it since I stopped using it. How about you deadstone

    Hi,

Yes, USB wireless mouse and keyboard, USB external hard drive ...

Have tried finding better USB drivers but nothing new on the MS Site, stilll getting the MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLET_REQUESTS blue screen now and again, even after formatting my external hard-drive to NTFS

Maybe I should stop using the USB wireless mouse and see what happens?

    this is driving me nuts!
