i9kfangui and the new Dell Duo Core Laptops
Friday, 10 February 2006
i9kfangui is not compatable with the new Dell Duo Core laptops at this time.
Please do not install or use i9kfangui with these laptops, there are some issues with the fan controls. I will try to get these sorted out in version 2.4, due out after the release of version 2.3
Thanks!

Contrary to this warning, I installed it anyway. It's working awesome for me, but I can't tell you it will work for you... but I would suggest you try it.
First I downloaded and installed the FanIO System Driver.
Then, I downloaded and installed I9kfanGUI fan controls. Within the controls I forced the laptop's fans to run at their fastest speed.
I don't know if the temps are reading 100% accurate, but here's the outcome:
Overclocked 7800GO (360/875)
Before: Idle at 70C and peak at 83C
After: Idle at 48C and peak at 59C
Stock T2300 Core Duo (1.66Ghz)
Before: Idle at 32C and peak at 46C
After: Idle at 21C and peak at 33C
I don't have measurements for the RAM, HDD, or northbridge before the changes, but all three currently hover around 36C. I am a very cool customer and my leg hair no longer melt!
UPDATE:
The honeymoon is over. I'm pretty sure the BIOS and FanGUI were fighting over control. I went several days of enjoying full fan control and very low temps, but now the fan on the left side of my notebook no longer comes on, so my CPU temps go through the roof and my GPU temps also get pretty high. I unloaded the FanIO driver and removed the FanGUI software. Somehow I need to regain control of the fans - or at least get stock control back.
Should I reload the Ricoh or Intel drivers? What do I need to install to let the laptop govern itself? This really sucks because now my gaming becomes a slideshow after 5 minutes of play. HELP!

I haven't purchased my e1705 yet, but your post is very helpful. How much louder is the machine with the fans running at 100%?
-
How can I get rid off message at start this program. That mean I alway have to "run" from this message.
-
I also ran the laptop with the fans set to "slow" which makes it virtually silent and my temps only go up about 10-15C under load.
-
I agree, it is one of the best freeware programs I have downloaded. Love it when I am playing games to keep track of the temps.
-
FYI, the FanIO driver has a virus. Kaspersky lists it as Trojan.Win32.Pakes - some type of backdoor trojan.
good luck. -
-
Hi Nick,
The message is " Open File-Security Warning"
"The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?"
Even though I did uncheck " Always ask..." but the message alway come up at start window. How can I make this massage disappear? -
Agree...this program is awesome.
-
-
And...Are you the same mine?
-
When I checked off that message it stopped showing it.
-
How do I uninstall it ?
-
If you are talking about the driver, just go uninstall it from the start menu. The software I believe you can just press delete.
-
There is no in Control Panel/ Add or Removed program
There is no in Start menu
There is no in C:/program files...
Where is it? -
I have looked on the internet and I see nothing about fanio driver being detected as a virus. Also the program works if you put the fan on the high settings.
-
According to this website, "Some malware camouflage themselves as fanio.sys..."
Doesn't this mean that if you download the FanIO driver from what is perceived as a "trusted" source that it MAY not contain a backdoor trojan? -
If FanIO from the website I linked to has a virus, then it's the only one that has ever escaped detection on one of my computers and the most well-behaved viruse I've ever seen.
No viruses here. -
Update: I just downloaded it again and now Kaspersky says it is clean. Funny game. Guess someone was worried about a knock on the door. -
I cannot download it. Said the link was removed. Is it a spyware?

It sounds like maybe the fan gave out...which I shouldn't happen, even if you were using I9kfangui. I would call Dell and tell them that the fan is no longer running and see what they can do for you. Also, make sure you logged into safe-mode and deleted it, that way it will delete all the registry options and etc.
-
if you haven't turned off your system restore, you could always restore to a point before you installed said drivers.
you can always whip and reinstall windows with a full format of the harddrive.
you could boot of the System restore cd and see if fans run. While there is software to control the fans, they are typically controled via the BIOS so by using a system restore cd (whithout actually doing a restore) you should be able to boot up via the cd and see if the fans work or not.
Try flashing the bios as well.
if all else fails, a call to Dell is your last option. -
I second USAF dude, Fans should not die like that no matter how you run them.
FanGui and the bios dont fight for control as FanGui has no direct access to control the Fans, Everything must go thru the Bios. Unless you somehow jacked up the firmware (which I really, seriously doubt) If FanGui does not kick in bios should revert back to its defaults. -
Before I even reformatted the computer, I updated to BIOS A01. I'll see if I can run the BIOS update again, but I doubt it will let me. In either case, I'll be able to confirm whether or not the fan(s) are dead tonight...
If they are dead... I'm gonna be really T.O.'ed! -
So check this out...
I enter Safe Mode and the fan on the right side is on at about medium speed. The left side fan wasn't on, but the laptop was still cool, so maybe it just didn't kick in. Anyway, as soon as I reboot into normal Windows, the fan turns off and doesn't come back... at least not so far...
While in Safe Mode, I uninstalled and deleted every fan app I had loaded and also eliminated every registry entry I could find. Well, back to the grind... -
Partial fix:
I reloaded the A01 BIOS flash update and now the GPU fan is on and controlling the GPU temps back at stock levels. Half-way there! -
-
BIOS rev A04 is on the supprot website now.
-

-
Is it worth updating from A03 to this or with the BIOS is it a case of "if it's not broke don't fix it?" -
Nick,
I really want to try it out. I was unable to download the file, can you send it to me as an attachment to my PM?

I updated the link to i9kFanGUI on the front page. He must have changed the link on his end. You can also click here.
And for an update, I used the Dell Diagnostic CD (you don't have to have the partition, it will run off the CD) and it gave me the proper error code for my defunct CPU fan. I contacted Dell and they very quickly sent a replacement laptop to me. I should be getting it in the next couple days and hopefully the fan won't fail on me. i9K is a good program - if not completely polished. Provided your fans are in proper working order, it should work fine. -
Tabbing between too many windows will do that I suppose! -
Ok so lets confirm. 2.2 is safe for a E1505? Whats the Dual Core issue then...?
Also everyone would think this is a better idea then a cooling pad? (Provided you sit your laptop on something that doesnt cover the bottom intake)
Also I guess this app is free then heh..
Is this only desiged for laptops?
I9kfanGUI is awesome!
