I have noticed that on my 1440 screen, even if I am in 1440 mode where the text is real small, it still shows 8 icons per column on the screen. If I drop it to 1280, it only drops to 7. If I remember with my desktop systems, I may have 10 icons in a colums. Does it keep the icons big enough to see better for my old eyes? Even dropping to 1024 x 768 only has 7 icons per row. I would think a bigger difference and much smaller desktop icons.
    Any ideas?

Only the native resolution (in your case 1440x900) gives a sharp image, any other resolution produces a blurred output. Therefore it is better to change the DPI to increase text and icon size instead of changing the resolution.

If you are using Vista then Right click on the desktop > Personalize > Adjust Font size (DPI).

Take a look at how DPI scaling affects icon and text : Windows Vista DPI scaling

I agree with the other poster's response on DPI. Set it to the other default value of 120 (it's now probably at 96) to get a feel for how big you want it. You can do a custom DPI after.

If you're running Vista, the rendering of icons will be much better when scaling up or down, but XP will certainly have this tweak, too.
