If you read my other thread, it seems Dell have lost my 3 month old XPS M1710..
Im waiting for a call back in 2 hours to confirm this, as this is when DHL will have finished scanning their systems to find it..
Wondering what sort of things its reasonable to ask by way of compensation in the event that they have indeed lost it.. Opinions appreciated..
Cheers
Neil

Umm a new computer with the same exact specs or better. Nothing short of that should be accepted. Its not ur fault they lost it, so u need to be given a laptop that is equal to the one u lost. I would say u should get a new one, if not at least an outlet one with similar specs as urs.

eaqaul to or better, plus a little something extra for the hassle

Ask for a position at the head of the company. A CEO, or, you could settle for a CFO...
This happened to a friend of mine, he got the same computer, same price, and a $50 gift card that he never used. He didn't ask for it either. -
They will just send you a new one with the same specs. You will not have a choice since your machine was new -
a refund...just kidding but it would be nice. how many times has it been serviced?
if three or more, you might have a right to ask..."you couldn't fix it, and now you lost it" speech. -
Initially, I would not ask for anything but rather wait to see what they are offering. If you think they are offering something reasonable then accept it.
If you don't think it is reasonable, then explain to them why and what you think will be reasonable. But first, you need to decide what is reasonable.
So, what is reasonable?
Don't expect them to compensate you for the loss of data on the machine. It is reasonable of them to expect you to have done a backup prior to shipping it out and also to have removed any sensitive information... such as financial, passwords, etc.
If it was an older system that is no longer in production, then it is reasonable to expect a new system with the same or better specifications as your old.
If it was a newer system, then an exact replacement is reasonable.
It is also reasonable to expect something in addition to the basic replacement of your laptop. They would do this as a gesture of goodwill and customer satisfaction, hoping that because of this issue they won't lose you as a customer forever. This could take the form of many things: upgraded specs on the laptop, extended warranty coverage, accessories, gift card, etc. -

as many posts I've read about folks getting free stuff for minor squibbles, I think it should be pretty easy for you to get a little something extra

Ask for a computer with specs better than your old one, they will probably want to send you a gift card, I don't know about you, but most people never end up using there cheap little gift cards. If you talk to someone higher up you'll probably have a better chance at getting what you want.

*sigh* now im being told that they wont know till monday..
They have had the laptop for 15 days now, I just want to know whats going on :/
Cheers for the suggestions guys, I guess I will have to see what happens monday, though if they cant tell me whats going on then, I think I may explode or something.. -
If they keep haggling around with you on this, you should get more. This would make me very upset if they lost a 15 day old system and then made me wait for almost a week just to tell you that they did indeed lose it. Compensation is definitely in order there. That would be like if you bought the computer and then told them you lost the money somewhere, but you would keep the computer until you knew for sure you actually did lose it and then you send it in. There's no way they would stand for that. So you shouldn't either. Just my opinion.
Of course, they may not have actually lost it, and they may call you Monday and say that they have it. In which case a gift certificate is probably the most you'll be entitled to. -
I would ask for the first merom m1210. just kidding. ask for a new m1710 since that it what you initially wanted.

Hehe I got a PM to update this for the curious
After a total of 6 weeks without my xps, Dell got the replacement to me. It had an upgraded processor (T2600 to a T7400), other specs were the same. In addition they gave me a spare battery/ac adapter, and a 944 printer/scanner with the wireless print server module.
Out of curiousity I checked my phone bill and over the 6 weeks I had spent nearly 10 hours on the phone to dell, not counting the few times I called them from work. The guys at tech support in ireland were great (props to James, who in fairness, seemed to be the one who got things done), but the 'red tape' policies of Dell left me seething at times (tech support cant reorder because logistics lost it, logistics have to reorder it but dont really know how, and dont have part numbers - took them 5 days to call me back about rebooking the system).
In all, im happy, I didnt do too badly out of the deal, tho In all honestly I dont notice any difference in the processors -
thats great to hear. It sounds like dell gave you some great stuff with the notebook as additions.

If Dell lost your laptop, what would you ask for?
