...will I be able to display the screen in 1680x1050 on my external monitor, or will I be stuck with 1440x900 because that's my notebook resolution?

I will hardly be using my notebook screen as I have an external 22" monitor, so I want to know if it's worth spending the extra $50 for that option.

    Thx guys,

My dell has a 1280x800 res and I can use it with my LG 22" external monitor at 1680x1050. Just go to properties, extend the desktop to the other monitor and set it as the main one. Then you can change the resolution to 1680x1050.

No, you can run them at separate resolutions.
