If you didnt opt for the accidental damage at purchase can you add it later?

Sure, you can give them a call and they will give you a quote. It might be a little bit more expensive than if you purchase it with your machine.

My friend has a 1420 for approximately 6 months and it dropped on to the floor with pretty significant damage to the case, dvd drive, and display. He called Dell about his situation, Dell sold him accidental damage and instructed him to send the system in for repair.

I have a 1420 and at the time I made my purchase, I didn`t think I needed the complete care. Now after reading posts about spills and drops decided to go for the extra protection. I went to the Dell site and ordered 3 years complete care. Just received e-mail confirmation. There wasn`t any mention of any one checking out my system. I always take every precaution to safe guard my laptop but it seems an accident can find you no matter what you do. I`d rather have it and not need it ....than need it and not have it.

I would imagine the checking may have to do with time elapsed since order. Dell isn't stupid. There not going to let you just insure a 3 or 6 month old system because the longer you have it the greater the odds you will damage it.

As has been said in other posts.... Many of the smaller parts are available from between 10 and 50 bucks on the net (ebay) and are often refurbs or used. The main board, vid card, CUP and displays are the most expensive items to replace and are from 75 to 300 dollars. Weigh the odds of damaging your system with that information along with your own confidence in your capabilities to replace said items and decide for yourself it its worth it.

I find that hard to believe that Dell knowing that the 1420 was damaged already and proceeded to sell the accidental damage and then fix it... C'mon!

Its all about relative risk as Sparky said. The longer the system is owned, the higher the cost to extend or even add a complete care warranty.

It's not all that unusual...HP/Compaq did the same thing for my bro in-law. The only catch was that since he bought the coverage after the purchase, the sales rep said he would have to wait the mandatory 30 days before filing the claim and sending it back.

What the heck does the sales rep really care? He just made a sale
