Wow! [:0]
Not even the BBB helped? Did you get a service upgrade even?
It's odd how different the resolutions we all got to our problems with that model. It would be nice if they had a uniform policy.
So your next pc will no doubt NOT be a dell...............
-
No.
They replaced my six month old 5150 with a new one, this is all they are going to do. -
I just came back to update that after being very persisitant with Dell they finally offered me 30% depreciation on my 5150 which of course is still absurd in my opinion. Its not my fault that they made such a blunder with the overheating and mainboard failures and still sells these. When I finally made it clear that this is unacceptable they gave me an RMA to take it back for free. I ship the unit back monday at my expense.
In summary I must say that I am not biased at Dell even despite this horrid experience. I know that any company makes mistakes and of course they have to try and keep their losses as minimul as possible.
Wether I choose to buy another Dell or not, I will miss the one thing out of my 5150 and that is the ability to run my screen resolutions at 1400x1050. I need to replace this laptop now and am open for any suggestions. I would love to run at 1400x1050, be a little lighter than 10 pounds and not have an overheating/mainboard failure issue, yet money is a little tight as of now so I may have to sacrafice.
Gaming is not important as I have a powerful desktop.
Open for any advice.

Excellent news! [8D]
I'm sorry it's been as frustrating for you as it was for me but it was a relief to finally send mine back for a refund.
I bought an 8600 with my refund (money was tight for me too) and got an SXGA screen which I hated at first--thought every thing on it appeared too small--but it grew on me and I kept it. It runs very cool and so far I really like it.
I hope someone can come along with a good suggestion for your needs though. You may want to post a new thread for that--maybe even in the hardware forum where you might get suggestions for other manufacturers.
Glad you were persistent! Good luck with your next machine!

I see alot of people grabbing the 8600 series, they must be pretty nice. Weight is a bigger factor for me, I remember wondering when I got my 5150 if it were made of cinder brick lol.
The 600M seems like a model that might suit my needs better if I stick with Dell. It boasts the lighter weight and the screen I seek, with a mediocre video card. At around $1,200 with this configuration. I will keep my eyes out for 600m reviews.
Does anyone here have a 600M? Is it reliable? This is the biggest factor and I certainly dont want to go through that anymore. -
Though large, I think the 8600 is lighter than the 5150 was.
If I were you.........I'd check the dell message boards for user comments on the 600 M............[] (Not that I know anything bad about it, just seems prudent at this point)

I searched the Dell forums and didnt turn anything real bad up on it. seems there is a "running warm" problem near the touchpad that results from the hard drive but this didnt seem to be a concern.
I did not see anything about having to clean the fan out and replacing mainboards like the 5150 lol.
According to Dell, the current configurtation makes this unit weigh in at just under five pounds, that is roughly half of this 5150 so that is a great bonus.
Downsides, Radeon 9000 which seems to be a much lesser card and its built in. Also no firewire port.
Upsides, light weight and available SXGA screen.
I wonder if I just sit on it some day soon I might can grab it for $1000 with deals and coupons would be nice.
