Hi, all.
I'm debating whether to get the M140 with TrueLife. Can you all weigh in on what you think of these screens? How good are the contrast ratio, brightness, and viewing angles, and how do they compare to similar offering from HP and Toshiba?
Thanks.

This is either hate or love relationship. I personally hate it because of the font size. You will need glasses to read the fonts (honestly). I know you can increase the font size in Windows, but doing so, again IMO, the font will look aweful. Running windows in 96 dpi fonts is the best dpi. Dell will set this at 120, making it so ugly. I am willing to pay extra to get the non-TrueLife. I had one of those screens before and couldn't stand it and had to use an external monitor.

i love my truelife. i dont regret it at all getting it. it makes the images a lot clearer.

I didnt get true life by choice, i went to a dell store and saw it there, it was hard to see the screen because of all the reflections.

The TrueLife screens are actually pretty good. Bright and vibrant colors. Now the issue with them is that because they are so bright, a lot of people tend to see the backlight leaking more so than older matte screens. It's not really a big deal and is usually a matter of taste. You'll get used the to the reflective background too, as it's usually not an issue unless you are outdoors or are in front of a strong light.
The viewing ables are pretty wide on my XPS Gen 2, though the colors look more washed out the farther of an angle you go. Again, colors are pretty bright and crisp. Generally you can't go wrong with any laptop that has that reflective gloss type screen. -
I'm pleased with mine, I agree with Howdogg on the viewing angles.
You can always tweak the resolutions if you need bigger texts hin.
I recommend -

One thing to remember here folks, is that brigthness and viewing angles have alot to do with whether you have a samsung or an lg panel and those of you making comments about the qualities of your screens ought to be mentioning this important piece of information as it has more to do with color and brigthness than what resolution the panel has.

From the machines I have seen, the TruLife is a nice touch. I like the viewing angles of the reflective screen, the clarity and sharpness and overall 'zip' of the LCD in comparison to standard LCDs.
The overall feel of the laptop is notched-up a few points -
THere are some common misconceptions as to the properties of these screens. WUXGA AND WXGA refers strictly to resolution folks, it has nothing I SAID NOTHING YEP THATS RIGHT>>>>>>ONCE AGAIN NOTHING< NADA to do with the brightness OR the viewing angles. ALot of people make this mistake, the brigthness and viewing angles are properties associated with the panels manufacturer, not its resolution size. I have used wuxga for work and I have never gotten used to those glossy reflective panels, the only glossy panels that dont have this problem are the fujitsu crystal view lcds on their laptops, partially due to the high 300 nits brigthness and their proprietary solution to lcd refelctive problems.
Your statement above is incorrect, the reflections in the true life panels are NOT because they are SOO bright, they are at least a full 50 nits dimmer than fujitsu screens, in fact probably the opposite is true, the true life screens arent bright enough.
Not to knock you down or anything, its just alot of people make this misconception about the properties of wuxga panels with true life. -
I just got a dell vostro 1500 with true life. Had read the reviews here, which seemed to be a wash--same number of people who liked or disliked it.
Time to throw in my own 2 cents: I really don't like it.
Yes, the picture is "crisper" than a traditional matte finish. However, I find that working in even a moderately bright environment causes very bad reflections and not being able to see the image on the monitor can be really annoying. I'm kinda sensitive to bright lights (even driving down the freeway at night...), and I find the reflection to be so bright that it is difficult to make out the text. Also, I don't like that I can see my own reflection in it, no matter the viewing angle.
I do a lot of reading and writing of text on my machine and really wish I would've gone with traditional matte finish. whoopsie... -
I'm a huge fan of matte screens. After using a glossy screen for the past 2 monthsthough, I have to say they arent as bad as people make them out to be. You can get used to the reflections etc. The picture itself is great and matte screens cant compare.
For me it's stuff like seeing a reflective light bounce on screen when you type on it and having to have perfect viewing angles that doesn't sit well with me. I think it's a great screen for multimedia/movies etc, but just not a great choice for everyday usage. -
gives it the bling factor.. love it...
