    Hi everyone,

I'm from Canada and I'm about ready to buy one of these laptop but I'm interested in knowing which laptop between the New Inspiron 15 and the Studio 15 has the better build quality, which one is less likely to eventually fail ? I've read a few topic concerning the Studio, seems like there's some failure here and there but it's tough to tell for the New Inspiron 15, doesn't seem like there's alot of people who have it.

But basically, is it worth spending the extra 100$ to get the Studio even though they have the exact same configuration ?

Both laptops feature a plastic exterior. I haven't heard too many complaints with the older Inspiron, and IMO it looks to be a very sturdy laptop, including the new Inspiron. Studio 15 looks to be a nice laptop as well, and it's getting a redesign (15.6", 16:9 aspect ratio) which should be available in the U.S. by the end of this month, so it's difficult to tell if it's going to be good quality.

Whether or not it's worth the extra $100, I would take a look at the two laptops and see which one suits your needs better. Then invest on a decent warranty if you worry about hardware failure in the future.

Where did you find out that the Studio 15 will get a redesign? Do you know any more info like possibly about a new budget 13" laptop for either the Inspiron or Studio line?

Thanks icecubez, I've been looking at both for a while now but can't decide.. I'm already taking the 3 year warranty but I'd like to avoid using it as much as possible so that's why I'm wondering which one is the most reliable and well built.

nomoredell... Thanks for the insight but it doesn't help me at all if you don't explain me why...

the studio 15 is a well made machine. I tore one completely down and swapped a motherboard for it, so the owner could have dedicated graphics power. It took about 90 minutes or so to tear her apart swap motherboards and put it together.
It is made well, but it seems that the problem with the system is that slot loading optical drive. A number of members here had problems with it

If you're talking about the stuck/not working eject button, I don't think that actually has anything to do with the optical drive itself. I just replaced my media center control cover (Dell sent it for free when I told them about the button issue), and it's been working fine ever since. I think it's just a problem with the earlier models having poorly designed media control covers.

Both machines are very well made. I have the Studio myself and bought the new Inspiron 15 for my girlfriend. I've opened both up, and I have to say, the only difference is appearance. The Inspiron 15 also has some updated software and quickset which is more visually pleasing. Also, the BIOS start screen is a tasteful black screen with a chrome Dell Logo and loading bar. The Studio just shows the plain ugly Dell BIOS screen upon start up. So it's up to you, the only difference is appearance. They're both well built. To be honest, I'd say just get the Inspiron 15. It's a pretty sexy machine in its own right. Also, it's much lighter than my Studio 15 when I compare them.

Yeah, I think the Studio is definitely more oriented around pleasing aesthetics than the Inspiron, at least the ones I've seen in stores.

I use only eject button from media center.
But overall the problem with not working media center button is very simple. And it is not in media center buttons.
It is just because the media center panel is not very good spoiled to whole notebook panel/surface.
I had my MOBO replaced and before It I had 2 buttons without action (not active) - since than everything fine!

    Sorry my bad english!

So if someone has problem just open and try to squeeze media center panel with the hole board "softly" and in most cases your buttons will be fine!

I've seen both machines. I've gotten one for my girlfriend. The Studio is also a rectangular box. If you don't like it, then that's alright. Just don't speak your opinion like it's the truth. Your opinion is just subjective. Also, have you seen a properly cleaned NEW Inspiron 15? The black piano finish is gorgeous. The new speaker grill also looks more sharp than the Studio's in MY OPINION. The front power light LED also looks nice. Let me ask you nomoredell, do you actually own one? Have you used one for hours at a time? If not, then I'm sorry but who are you to tell me to rethink my opinion and go to best buy? I OWN my Studio 15. I spent a couple hours replacing the hard drive on the Inspiron 15, adding more ram, and doing a clean install on Vista when it came so I think I know what I'm doing.

Anyway, what does our own opinions on appearance have to even do with any of this? The thread starter was asking about quality, not personal taste on aesthetics. Obviously, nobody who has posted here has owned one and used one for an extended time before besides myself, so I don't know why they are bashing the Inspiron 15 when they don't even own the thing.

type Studio 1555 in any search engine and there should be articles on it. if you want to see pictures of it, check out Dell India or Dell Singapore, as they are already released in those countries.

The build quality of the Inspiron models seems to be on the decline, IMO. The 1520 was rock solid (my brother hasn't been able to kill one in 18 months). The 1525 is a notch below the 1520 in look and feel.

The 'New Inspiron 15' (1545), according to several reviewers and my own observation in Best Buy, is a step further down the ladder. Certainly not the worst I've seen, but it clearly was built to a price point (or under it).

I have to say the new Inspirons look a lot better than when they first the redesigned Inspiron 1520. In my opinion, the 1520 lacked any styling and was quite dull to look at.

The 1520 may not have been much of a looker, but it is screwed together rather well. It's the old style vs. substance argument.

A lot of the Studio's seem to be having a lot of problems, there are less problems reported with the Inspiron.

there are old inspirons and new inspirons.
dell 700m/6000/1420/1520/1720 are old inspirons from kevin rollins era.
1525 and 1545 are new inspirons, you dont hear alot problems with them is becuz ppl just throw them away once laptops start having performance issues, dirty cheap asp $400 models.

IMO, the Vostro 2510 is built better than either the Studio 15 or Inspiron 15!

As long as you like Cherry Red, it's a steal at $649 with dedicated GPU and WXGA+ display- LINK

So misinformed. We don't hear alot of issues with the 1525 and 1545 because they are pretty stable systems that people don't have issues with.

As to the Kevin Rollins comment, you need to educate yourself a little, Kevin is what was wrong with Dell, Michael has stepped in to try and fix the all the damage Kevin did.

Just a casual observation, but the 1545 hasn't been around long enough to establish any sort of track record yet......

I'm going to ask you again, do you own one? Lol, my Studio has had more problems in the first 30 days than my girlfriend's Inspiron 15. My Studio had the media panel glitch, fingerprint reader not working, and media panel dented. Lol. I bought it new right when it got out.

Yep, and that's the secret to happiness and longevity- buy a business model! Better support when you do need it, often have better warranties (like the 3-yr on my Latitude E6400) and just an overall more pleasant ownership experience. And often for no more than lesser 'consumer' models...
