Unload any background applications (even the virus guard for best performance) while running the game. And update video drivers if you already haven't.

You can also run 3D mark and compare your score against other Vostro 1500/inspiron 1520 notebooks with a similar configuration (8600MGT), this way you can see if there is anything wrong with your 3D performance.

turn off aero and automatic scaling. to turn off automatic scaling just go to the nvidia controll panel and you will find it.

I think you can right click on a game icon and disable Aero while that game is running.

Somebody want to correct me if I'm wrong.

Good call. There are a few options you can set. Right click on the shortcut to the game and choose properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. You can disable themes, desktop composition and display scaling. Tinker with it.

If I am not mistaken, Desktop composition is Aero.

There are a few more options, such as 640x480, which, unless you're running the game at that resolution, doesn't seem to be the proper choice.

Does anyone know how to determine your FPS in Halo?

Well it can be a pain, I will be doing it this week. So far it doesn't seem to hard. Load xp pro with sata drivers then install all of the drivers needed.
