On the Inspiron 1520, I know that turning off wireless if you don't need it as well as decreasing screen brightness helps A LOT (this should help on any laptop, but on 1520 it works very well).

If you left click the battery icon in your taskbar, you have three power plans to choose from: balanced, power saver, and high performance. The power saver option will give you the most battery life. There should also be a "Learn how to conserve power" link below those three options that might have some good tips for you.

Undervolting helps greatly. If you have an Nvidia graphics card, underclocking really really helps, and so does turning PowerMizer on in the Nvidia Control Panel. Dimming your brightness maxmizes your battery too, as the screen is one of the main power hoggers. As noted above, turning wifi off if not in use helps.

there's a software out there i heard about but forgot the name. it's supposed to 2x your battery life. what it does is actively seek out unused hardware components and shut them off (ethernet, USB, dvdrom, etc)
