I just purchased a new studio 17 and was told by a friend that new computers come with a lot of Peripheral junk that just slows it down and makes internet slower...
1 is it easy to take all that junk off? and if so how might i go about doing that and
2 circuit city or some store like that told me they would do all that stuff for $100... is it worth it? or should i just do it myself?

if anyone can help it would be much appreciated
and fyi I'm kind of on the low end of the tech savvy scale so simple steps would be nice :) thanks

    1. It's fairly easy to do. It's best if you could just reinstall the OS without all the bloatware, but you can also uninstall them individually through your control panel.

    2. I'll do it for you for $50 :D Again, it's not a difficult task for you to do. If you choose to reinstall your OS, there's plenty of guides online that show you how.

Hi. Hopefully I'll be able to answer your questions

Your friend is mostly correct, in that many manufacturers load up their system images with extra software. Some like having stuff like that, while others don't. If you bought your Dell from the online store, you could have deselected pretty much all of it. Also, business systems have clean installations period, as companies simply won't tolerate anything less.

Question 1. Yes, there are several ways.
You can perform what's known as a clean install of Windows Vista. Unlike a few other manufacturers, Dell provides a full Windows Vista disk, not just a disk containing the same hard drive image that came on your laptop. This way you can reinstall windows, your drivers, and any additional software you got with your Dell and get a fresh start. Link to Dell support page that walks you through the clean install process., (scroll down to the part beginning with "Prepare Your Computer For A Reinstallation" and proceed from there)

You can uninstall individual apps. One of the easiest ways to do this is to run what's known as the "PC Decrapifier." http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ It scans your system and detects most of what people consider to be junk. You then can choose exactly which programs it will uninstall. It also looks for links to things like internet offers and the like. You'll also probably want to follow up with CCleaner in order to ensure that the program's uninstaller removed everything.

Question 2. Nope, set aside about two hours and do it yourself. You'll save yourself money (what's not to like about that ;) ) and you'll feel more confident in using your machine as you'll know more about how it works. It's really easy to do the clean install or app uninstallation, and by following the Vista Tips and Tweaks sticky by Les, you'll be flying in Vista in no time :D

    Hope this helps,
    Ricky :)

You can do it easily yourself using the OS restore disc and the drivers CD. You should really get the drivers right from the site since they are the most up to date. You can pay them to do it, but they won't do as good of a job and you can easily do it yourself so why give them money.
