The lights on my laptop keep blinking. The 3 lights at the top keep blinking and the lights near the bottom will blink sometimes too. This only happens when it is plugged in. But it doesn't boot up either. And it doesn't do anything at all when unplugged and relying on the battery. Anyone know what's wrong with it?

So it boots when it is plugged in, but not when on battery?

No, it doesn't boot at all. The only reaction I get is the blinking lights when plugged in. Does nothing on battery. I've tried leaving out the batter for 10 mins and plugging it back up but nothing. I even tried a different power cord, but nothing. I really don't want to take it somewhere to have someone else fix it if someone can help me. They take way too long for simple things.

You could try reseating everthing like the memory and hard drive. If nothing is happening when you turn it on, it's probably time to send it to Dell.

I am a customer advocate here at Dell headquarters in Texas. I just found this thread and wanted to see if I could help at all.

The blinking lights are an error message, similar to the beep codes used on older computers.

Try removing the hard drive, any PCMCIA card, battery and memory from the system and then see if it still does the same thing (on AC power, of course). If it still does the same thing then either the motherboard or processor is the problem.

If the lights are different after removing those parts, try putting them back in one at a time (for memory, one stick at a time, tested in each of the two memory slots) to see when it changes back to the blinking you originally described. Normally, the part you put in when the problem starts back up is one that failed.

If you have an in-home (aka onsite) service warranty, the troubleshooting will be needed to determine what parts will need to be sent to the technician.

If you have a return to depot repair warranty, then you can have a service set up to send your system in for repair. This usually takes between 5 and 10 business days, counting shipping both ways. You will want to remove the hard drive (since I am almost positive it is not the problem) so you don't loose your data. The repair depot will be able to test and repair any failed part of the system.

If you have any other questions on this, or have problems getting the needed service set up, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help in any way I can.
