    Hi,
I have an Inspiron 1420 that seems to be overheating, and this started when I installed A09 BIOS (which was supposed to prevent this problem). The left palm rest gets very hot to the touch, and whats more, I CANNOT READ temperature readings from nTune or Everest Ultimate. It just says 0 Deg.
Could this be a problem with hardware?

I stressed the system running 3dMark05 and after a few tries, I got a BSOD 0x0000116 something like nvlddmkm.sys

I dont want to talk to dell yet as I have moved out of the country (to a country where Dell does not operate), hence no Dell warranty

Sounds like you are having a GPU driver error. I would download the latest driver from dell, uninstall your current driver and then try installing the driver again. Try downloading GPU-z or hardware monitor if the others are not working.

The bios update was not intended to make you run cooler, it was intended to have the fan kick on more often to prevent the GPU from idling or working at high temps. It has been keeping me below the 70 degree damage point, however not when I actually watch a video or do a little light gaming.

Forgot to add that if the hardware is going, you should be seeing some weird artifacts on the screen first. That will occur before you lose output completely.

GPU-Z still wont give me temperature details, and when I installed Hardware monitor, it asked me to restart. But after that, I couldn't login into windows! The system crashes, and I've done a system restore already..

I have a feeling that the BIOS update somewhat wrecked the FAN control of the unit. I will try i8kfanGUI later... But other suggestions are welcome!

I am actually having the exact same problem. Ever since I installed the A09 Bios update, it seems to have messed up the fan control on this setting. While I am getting temperature readings, they don't look so good (CPU is on avg between 65-75C).

The laptop seems to be working fine but the underside is boiling enough to fry an egg on. The engineer should be on his way today, hopefully its just a dust build up issue like above.

Lol. How long have you owned this laptop? Wouldn't it be nice if there was an upgraded cooling solution? It would be nice to at least have another fan just for the GPU.
