Going to purchase one or the other but here are the concerns i have seen with both from numerous customer reviews... If anyone could address these concerns i would be grateful =)
XPS 1530
Runs Burn your wrist hot
Very very bad screen move an inch unviewable.
Extremely difficult to open latch
Some people complained of issues trying to downgrade to XP
VERY laggy keyboard strokes causing up to a 1 second delay on keystrokes
Inspirion 1520
Shoddy build
Lots of flex
Lot's of motherboard crapping out complaints
HEAVY as a brick
Very very thick form factor
All of these complaints were from Dell customer reviews on the dell website. I have read both reviews on this website but thats only the opinions of a few people Would love to get some Insight from others Owners especially to confirm or refute these complaints =) Thanks.

May want to chuck in a Vostro to the mix (better build quality then 1520)
-
Wanted to but Dell reps have now told me they will not sell Vostros to anyone who does not have a confirmed Business Tax ID number. Tried 3 different reps.

My impressions of the i1520 is that it has awesome build quality. It has the most solid feeling build quality of any laptop I've ever owned personally... And I've owned quite a few laptops since 1998.
I also don't have any flex anywhere.
I haven't had the motherboard crap out on me yet, but I have the 3 year warranty so I'm not worried if it does. -
I am typing on my New m1530 right now and there's no 1-sec delay ! I don't like the keyboard feel on the smaller m1330 but am really impressed by it here. And mine runs cool...no worries about burns here. And the latch problem?!? Mine is magnetic - I just shut and open mine. As for XP, that I can't talk about but I don't think that is unique to this computer. I think it's a no-brainer to choose the XPS m1530 over the 1520 esp. with the recent deals and coupon. GOOD LUCK !

You're reading the wrong topics I guess...
My M1530
- Doesn't run hot
- Very nice LG screen (AO's are also great I read)
- Magnetic latch works perfect
- No problems installing XP (or finding drivers)
- Had keyboard lag but that's just a small software problem (can't remember how i fixed it)
-
Ummm... could you give it a shot at remembering? I'm having the same problem and would really appreciate assistance.
-
LED screen is awesome and you can move any number of inches or feet and its perfectly viewable. Even CCFL is viewable, just dimmer and lower viewing angles.
Uh, there is no "latch" in the first place.
Why would you want to downgrade to XP? Plus there are plenty of guides that detail how to downgrade... its not difficult at all.
Laggy keyboard? Where in the world did you get this from?
Are you sure this is the XPS M1530 your talking about? Or an HP notebook? -
CAN'T...PRY...THIS...LATCH...OPEN! (Cracks case of notebook open) -
I actually was checking out the 1520, before I went w/the 1530.
The 1530 I have no issues with, it's a great notebook and does everything I need to, plus more.No burning my wrist, I have ease of use when opening the lid, and *keystrokes* ~ have never even entertained this type of problem.
The 1520 for me when I was checking out felt like a *brick* (bulky), and it just wasn't what I wanted.
That is why I went w/the 1530 in red, *stylish, sleek and sexy*, and the reliability, good XPS Tech Support, and it just fit my *needs*
Hope that helps you in your decision process!
Good luck to you!

I am thinking that you are taking what some people said here a little too literally. I think that a lot of people that would actually take the time to post on web forums probably have HIGH expectations for what their laptops are going to be like. I was in a shop looking at some old notebooks and let me tell you, things have really been changing for the better. Sure, there is a little too much emphasis on style these days, but my 'budget' inspiron is vastly better put together and faster than the latitude I use at work. That latitude it really only 2-3 years old I think (uses the trusty pentium M).
Where money is no object I would definitely spring for the XPS . . . it simply has some really hot options like an LED display and superior chipsets / overclockability and stuff. If you are really not much of an enthusiast, an Inspiron would do you VERY well. Mine feels solid, even when I pick it up by the corner with the screen open. I had trouble with my screen, but I got a new one and I am liking it more everyday (not more 105 DPI to read . . . This thing is sharp enough). The keyboard feels great to me and the battery life is good. I think the only two things that I will be dealing with in the future is a battery that jiggles too much (tried different batteries, think this chassis is just off slightly) and audio that does crackle from time to time. Though I can think of some ways to deal with that. I DO have a problem with how hot Dell seems to let these things run, however there are not many brands I can think of that are noted for their coolness. My laptop is NOT uncomfortable to use on my lap however. I am just pretty anal about putting it in a place where airflow can be restricted.
Money no option: XPS
A computer is just a computer: Inspiron
What's that BS about not allowing someone to get a Vostro unless they are in business? Those things aren't exactly cheap compared to the regular home lines. That seems snobby. Also seems that if you are in business to sell, you should sell to anyone. What if I wanted to get a projector? "Uh, that one is just for business'". Riiiiiight. -

At its current price, XPS is a terrific deal with the 30% off coupon as well as Dell EPP discount if your eligible to get a decent system from between 1,200-1,400. Of course its more expensive than Inspiron, but it is much much cheaper than what XPS is typically which is close to $2,000 and up.

They're bundling in Office AGAIN this weekend with that sale though (on both the Studio 17 and XPS 1530)
-
Haha no, warm not hot
Absolutely not true.
Nope, pretty easy for me, good that it stays closed.
You may run into issues downgrading
No keyboard lag at all
Inspiron:
Build quality is not excellent, but good
Some flex, yes
Haven't heard of motherboards going out
Not very heavy
Somewhat thick, as it's an entry laptop series -
Something just occurred to me...can you actually BUY a 1520 anymore? I've only seen the 1525 for months now.
The 1530 has a faster GPU than the 1520, and an infinitely faster GPU than the 1525's integrated graphics. The 1520 dosen't have a digital video output, the 1525 and 30 do. The 1520 dosen't offer Blu Ray. And only the 1530 offers an LED backlit screen.
Inspirion 1520 VS XPS 1530
