I run the same OS and have the exact same drive, and no problems here.
Make sure you use the USB cable that came with it. Also, try the 3 other USB ports. Make sure you run Windows Update. Also, reinstall your system drivers (mainboard drivers, either from Dell.com or the included driver DVD) and see if that helps, then report back. -
how do i run the drivers? it just says install all -
Have you installed the software that comes with the HD -
Hello,
This is Richard from the Dell Online Community Outreach. I just looked up the specs on you Seagate external drive, and it does indicate that it come with an intensive software/driver package. The AutoBackup and the FreeAgent Tools would be included with that package.
Have you had any issues so far with other USB devices or just this one (I realize you just got the computer yesterday)? Also, did you get a 3-way USB cable? Because sometimes if you don't put it in correctly the system won't see it (this happened to me).
See how installing the Seagate software package works.
Good luck,

) but i had no disks with the hard drive, all that came with it was the instructions and the actual hard drive itself the usb cable and the power cable

May I have the exact model number for this Seagate Freeagent external drive?

I found this page on Seagate's site. I am not sure if this is for your product.

Hey Kevanio, sorry to hear you're still having problems.
Try this:
1. If you have Windows Media Player 10 installed (if you don't, go directly to 2), download and install this. (If you're concerned about downloading a strange file, feel free to virus scan it, but I promise you can just trust me on this one.) Let it run and restart if it asks you to.
2. Right-click My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device Manager->View->Show Hidden Devices->Expand USB Devices and delete any and all devices listed there. You may see you FreeAgent drive, but if you don't, don't worry and delete whatever else you see there (MP3 players, thumb drives, etc.) Then reboot.
3. Plug in the FreeAgent and let me know. You do not need to install any of Seagate's software to make it work, it's purely optional. Hopefully after trying this you'll be able to just plug it in and all will be well.
Let me know. I have a few other things you can try if this doesn't happen.

Great! I'm glad it worked it out.

Try this link to download the Seagate DiscWizard software.

Actually it happens with my HP Deskjet printer as well..... The first time it tries to detect the USB device it may fail.... But it will make a hardware entry for that device with a Device is not Working properly sign there.... So what you have to do is remove that entry and again re-plug the device..... I guess the same is the case here too....

Yes. I have seen this happen before with one of my usb hard drives and removing the entry that was reported as not working properly then re-inserting the drive usually corrects it.
