Okay, here's where we are ... screen got fractured, new screen/inverter/ backlight installed. NEW screen still black, but visible with flashlight. Went ahead and got ANOTHER inverter off eBay and tried that - screen still black. Haven't ever replaced a backlight, and the operation looks delicate (and expensive to HAVE done). Could the problem be that the cord/cable/wire/ has worked loose at the source or something??? The backlight is under the tape on the screen, and the screen was securely shipped, I am skeptical that it's broken - and don't want to waste time trying to fix it. I have searched and searched, I have not discovered any of the other symptoms of a wearing out backlight (plus this one is supposed to be BRAND NEW). PLEASE HELP Thanx!!!

    BTW, it's a Dell Inspirion E 1505 Vista Home

TBH, if you've got no experience, you'd prolly be better off having a professional look at it. I'm with you on the looks-like-a-delicate-operation front, and it doesn't look like something you'd wanna get wrong.

I'd take it to a decent repair place, tell them what happened and what you've done since - you may have simply installed the new screen incorrectly or something.

    ^^just my 2c worth

thanks for being honest, Dragunluv. I would rather fix this myself than pay a shop $100+ to do it for me. I have rebuilt my Dell C 610 laptop, and re-worked this desktop that I am using. I eventually will purchase a new computer ... but am fond of LEARNING and then APPLYING that knowledge. And, if you never ask questions, you'll never know!!!

See, I am up in the mountains, and there are no repair shops AT ALL. I'd have to send the computer out, turn around would be about a month, and be short at least $100 for the repair. Any other suggestions??? THANX!!!

I tried to replace the ccfl in my inspiron 8600 and failed, even with detailed instructions. The hardest part is reinserting the bulb and reflector into the frame. It's VERY tricky, even if you do remember how it goes back together.

However, after I took it apart, I discovered that the bulb was probably fine, just that one of the wires to the bulb had worked loose. You could easily get to this point of the disassembly, right before removing the bulb and reflector, and possibly solder any loose leads. Or at least see if it's loose. There's a little rubber insulator that covers the connection. I put in a new bulb (I suck at soldering, so I'm pretty sure I screwed that up, too) and KINDA got it put back together, but it definitely wasn't the same. Worked for about ten minutes, with a LOT of backlight bleeding because of my sucky reassembly, then it went dark again.

Don't send out for repair. You can get a brand new LCD for ~$150 or a used one for under $100.

Thanks < Anodos!!! I see Dell has given you issues as well ...That's the thing ... I already HAVE that new screen IN HAND. It came with the inverter and backlight already installed. I even bought ANOTHER inverter and tried it, with the same results. So, I have a brand new screen/inverter/backlight , but no screen. Is it possible that the wire worked loose at the base??????????
If so, do I just need to remove something to get access or WHAT?????

There are a couple of possibilities. I'm not expert either, but maybe there's no power going into the inverter. The other possibility is there's something wrong with the little button for when you close the lid. If that's stuck, the power will always be off to the backlight. I'm not sure if that switch cuts off power from the inverter or to the inverter, though.

If the LCD you ordered is recent, I'd try sending it back. Was it pulled from a used system or was it new? If it was used, try buying a new one with a return policy and try it. If it still doesn't work, you'll know for sure it's in your system and your old panel is fine. Then it's probably time to send it to the shop.

    Good luck!

Thanks Anodos!!! You know, I thought the exact same things. I got the screen brand new off eBay about 9 months ago, I think I am burnt there., unless somebody else needs to buy one!!! I read in some other posts about different people having the same problem - and I inquired to the owner (I call her Mom). She tells me "that's not the problem" , but she doesn't know what IS the problem,. One guy just went and tore out his 'lid closed' switch, and that worked!

I can get ahold of another NEW screen/inverter for $79-to-the-door, but I only have a 7 day window for a refund. I can't recall how much I paid for the last one that I broke, but it was close to $100. I got burnt on the inverter I bought to try, because the thing came from China, and returns are only accepted if defective. That was MY mistake for not reading all of the terms.

I don't know ... the owner (Mom) is ready to send the POS out to have it repaired by a 'professional'. That's about as bad as taking your car to a shop to change your tranny, in my opinion!!! :)

Ha! I know it feels like you're admitting defeat. But maybe that's the best option at this point. Maybe at some point you'll get your machine working again and you can test that monitor you bought. If it's working and you don't need it, you could probably sell it on eBay yourself!

Off topic, you talking about transformer or transmission? Cuz even if I had a proper jack I would have no clue where to start on the latter. =S

Thanks guys!!!! Dragunlov ... I meant the transmission ;-) I am a shade-tree mechanic ... when the weather permits up here in the mountains. Computers seem to be my new wintertime hobby.

I guess I'll let Mom send of her stupid, overpriced POS to have it fixed. As far as SELLING on eBay, I don't know ...too much footwork involved. Thanks again Anodos and Dragunlov!!!
