Hey, i have an 1100 and i can not find any solution to the black border around resolutions smaller than 1024-768. trying to run a dos program or a game running at 800-600 will not stretch the screen to fill the whole panel. I have looked all over the net and cant find a solution to this, but maybe someone here can help.

Also, dell's website gives conflicting information on how much ram i can stack into this thing, some pages say 512 max and others say 1gig, would like to know for sure before buying any ram.

Thanks in advance if you can shed some light on this

They are probably saying that if you go with just 1dimm of ram you can only have 512. If you fill both slots with 512 though you will get 1gb and ram and it should work.

For the black edges try looking for newer video drivers.

    Updated video drivers already.

I think that there are 2 configurations for inspirons on memory, one that has 1 user accessable slot and another that has 2 user accessable slots. i have 2 accessable slots that shipped with 128 megs in each.

Regarding the black borders, I did a check and there doesn't seem to be a way to get rid of the borders on resolutions lower than 1024x768 according to dell.

Here's the link to their service page that describes this problem.

Regarding the memory, a user on the Dell Forum said to checkout the Crucial website. It indicates there that it can hold a max of 1GB, but another post from a Dell Moderator posted that it can only support upto 512MB. Here's the 2 links.

I have an Inspiron-4000. The ATI display options include 'scale image to panel size'. Make sure you have this option on. Then, go to MS-DOS promt and press ALT+ENTER to get full-screen. If the full-screen mode is properly stretched,go to real mode DOS from the "restart in MS-DOS mode" option in Windows98. Surprisingly, I find the DOS screen stretched as it was in MS-DOS prompt, no more black-border around the screen. So you have to do the ALT-ENTER thing everytime before going to DOS. Hope this helps ...
