I'm a student starting undergraduate studies in the fall and (like everyone else) I need a laptop. But like most students, I am on a budget. I've looked around, and I'm mostly looking at Dell due to the low prices.

Right now, I'm looking at the Inspiron 1150. I need a computer for word processing and the internet, so that's covered. What I was wondering is how the Inspiron holds up in other areas, mainly multimedia. Since I know very little about laptop technology, and this seems to be the place to get information on laptops, I was hoping you guys could help me out with a few questions. Thanks in advance.

First, what is with the graphics chip? I know its integrated, and called "Intel Extreme" but that's it. Is this an onboard 3D chipset? Will I be able to play 3D games on the Inspiron? I don't expect to be able to play the newest games, but it would be nice to have a laptop capable of handling, say, WarCraft III, Unreal Tournament, Quake III powered games, etc...

Second, the sound. "Integrated stereo sound?" Is this any good for listening to music? I listen to a lot of music off my computer... I have no idea what chipset this thing has or anything... please... help meeee....

Third... how good quality would video be on this? Would I be able to happily use it to watch DVD movies? Download video? Etc?

If you can help me with any of my questions, I'd appreciate it greatly. If I order before thursday I can get free shipping... but I hear there are also student discounts, but I'm Canadian, going to a Canadian university. Think I'd still be in luck?

Oh, and one thing I forgot... exactly how customizable IS Dell? Can you shave money off by, say, going for a slower processor, or is it only as customizable as the options on the website?

    Go to: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&kc=6V601&l=en&oc=1150FS&s=dhs
to customize it. As you can see you can go from 2.8ghz to 2.6ghz and save $130.

Well solinus, the inspiron 1150 isnt a bad laptop at all and its a good choice if youre on a budget. If im not mistaken, it comes with integrated 3D graphics that uses shared memory from the RAM up to 64 MB. It isnt a good choice if you intend to play new games, but for old ones i think it will be fine.
I own an inspiron 5100 and since both the 5100 and the 1150 have the same integrated sound, i can tell you that you have nothing to worry about. The only problem with most laptops, includint these ones, is that the speakers arent very good. But your problem will be solved by using external speakers or even headphones. I think you could watch DVD's with no problem with the 1150. Hope this helps
