It is up for order at Walmart now. At $698, you get Pentium Dual-Core T2390, 2MP webcam, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, gigabit ethernet, DVD+/-RW drive, 2 USB, 1 Firewire, VGA port. NO modem, HDMI, eSATA though. No mention of bluetooth.

For this is specs, the price is OK, but not great. I think if it is $599.99, it will be better. I don't think there will be much to config at Dell website later this month, other than Core 2 Duo processor and bluetooth. [IMG]

Seems pretty underpowered for the price.

I mean hell, you can pick up a 1330 with IGP with alot more under the hood for $899

If you get the IGP in the XPS, what else "under the hood" would be better than this? Is a T57XX really any better than the T23XX for office-type stuff?

That's pretty pricey for what you get under the hood.

Well, maybe, maybe not. Battery life is unknown in the Inspiron 13. WalMart does not seem to indicate what battery it comes with.

I would assume it would be more than fine for office type applications. That wasn't my point. It appears to be slightly overpriced for what you are getting.

Dashpilot, the $899 1330 (I see $999 at dell.com, BTW) surely comes with a 4-cell battery, I don't see how this could be any smaller. I still don't see what you get "under the hood" for the extra $200.

I think this is a decent deal, I don't know why you are all so down on it. Show me another 13" notebook you can get for $700, because I've never seen one.

trwt, you would be correct. The price has jumped back up to $999. You are right there are not any other 13" notebooks for $700.

Seems to me a little better processor could have been included. The 2390 is fairly dated. Nonetheless I would like to see one in person.

Anyone know if they are going to carry these in stores or not?

At $699, it is the lowest 13" you can find. For example, Apple's MacBook starts at $1099.

13" will always cost higher than 14" & 15". Couple of reasons - 1. the panel will cost higher due to the volume and cut, 2. due to form factor, 13" requires more daugther boards, and may require more layers in the PCB, 3. 13" thermal solution would cost more due to its smaller size.

Inspiron 13 is really a stylish box with great value. For example, even though it positioned as a entry level box, it still comes with a slot-load DVD drive. Even at $699, you get a 2MP camera (vs. other laptop only have the VGA, which is a 0.3MP or 1.3 MP).

Dell did a great job with it.

Yeah, smaller = higher price. Your paying for the portability.

Not sure which Toshiba model you are referring to. But all the major top brand 13" all come in above $1,000 - Apple, Sony dominate this space and all have priced over $1,000.
