I've owned a Dell XPS M1330 for about a year and am very happy with it. I want to buy a laptop for somebody as a gift, and I was thinking about the Inspiron 13, which I never actually saw. I know it's basically the lower quality brother of the 1330, I'm just wondering how lower the quality is.

Can any of you Inspiron 13/M1330 owners help me out?

    Thanks

I own an XPS M1330 and have played with the Inspiron 13 a few times at BestBuy already. I would say that it is a good analogy, that the Inspiron is a lower end XPS M1330. I found the display to be pretty bright in the store and basically the design is the same except the Inspiron is made of plastic. The one thing that I did not like personally is the plastic on the palm rest, it is textured and looks kind of cheap to me. Then again for the price I guess it's what is to be expected.

Inspiron = budget....less performance (not for gaming especially)....and cheaper build

XPS = expensive........performance (for gaming).......nicer looking (IMO)....dedicated support and metal chasis build (way better)

really you shouldn't even be comparing these two laptops.....b/c their price range is quite dramatic

find a price range.........if it is above 1000 go with the XPS......otherwise you are better of with the inspiron

Well it is a gift. They probably won't be doing a lot of gaming.

To be honest with you, I don't find the price difference THAT dramatic. You can get the entry level XPS at around $1000, maybe even less if you're lucky enough to get a deal, and a decent Inspiron 13 at around the same price.

I'll might be waiting for some Inspiron deals.

    inspiron 13 starts at $599
xps starts at $999 (on sale right now)

thats 30% more in price.....obviously if you compare a fully loaded inspiron 13 and a base version of the xps, the prices could be comparable.........so you need to weigh the end user.....(ie the giftee :D)

    good luck in your purchase

I have a 13, and a friend at my work bought and returned the 1330. To be honest for the price i could not be happier with my 13, yes the plastic palm rest is a little eh but not that bothersome. It gets a tad bit warm but again nothing crazy just warm.

Overall for the price its a great machine.

Ps- can i be your friend? Cause no one has ever given me a laptop as a gift ha

If, I had to choose pricewise probably the Studio 13. I almost got the 1330, when I was deciding...but went with the 1530 instead! ;) :)
And, the 1330 is a very nice lappy! :)

It, comes down to your personal choice ;)

    Cin ;) :)

At a glance on Dell's site, I noticed that there is a deal for a XPS 13 that has a T8100 processor, lots o ram and a big ole hard drive. The inspiron is cheaper, and not by much. For that reason, XPS all the way!

    Thanks guys.

So basically the Inspiron is ok, not bad quality. I think I'll wait some more, see if we get some Inspiron deals before Christmas.

@piker28 - yeah you can be my friend but you'd have to wait some 26 years to get a laptop, like this friend of mine did. :)

Been covered here pretty well. But of course the Inspiron 13 is a great laptop, it's just of lesser quality but that doesn't mean it won't hold up well. Especially for an average user, they will appreciate the system regardless of XPS branding :)

    Oh I have another question.

Does the Inspiron 13 come with any extras such as a laptop sleeve or earbuds or anything like the XPS does?

I guess not, since it's more of a budget laptop, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

a little off the point but i noticed you can add the 8400m gs to the inspiron 13 if that helps your decision at all
