    Inspiron 13z (1370) - brand new but screen dark, bordering on blank

    I just took a brand new Inspiron 13z (1370) out of the box and when I first turned it on the screen appeared completely blank, although I could hear it booting. Using a flashlight, I can see that the screen is working, but is very, very dim. Brightness controls are not working and it also appears that the touchpad is unresponsive - after leaving the computer to go to stand by, it didn't wake up again when I used the touchpad or its buttons. I've contacted Dell support via e-mail (unable to call them during office hours), but thought I might get a quicker and better answer here. Any suggestions?
