I just built one and it came out to $845.
Is this a good deal?

Only thing I didn't get was security and MS Office (I'm hoping someone I know has office 2007 so I can burn it.)
What do you think? Should I buy today? $845 without tax, free shipping.
The actual laptop is only $804, the case puts it up to $850 range.

What do you plan to use this for? If you want to play some games you may want to upgrade to the 8400m gs. The screen is also backed up a little so it may take awhile to get your order. I may consider upgrading your CPU unless you really don't plan on doing anything too strenuous on this laptop.
-
I don't play any games...I'm hoping the weaker video card will not affect me.
I mean, I think it's only 100 more so i might do it. I just don't want to have the wasted components if I don't need them. Also the reason I just got a 1.5ghz b/c I don't play any games. -
If you're just using it for browsing the internet, typing papers, movies, music, etc, then you'll be fine.
-
It's weird how they do things. Like the 50 dollar upgrade to the 1.6ghz. I don't really play highend games either, nor use it for more than internet, some light gaming, and dvds, but I wanted to be sure I was futureproofed abit, and got the 1.8ghz just in case. Wanted the 2.0ghz for the 4meg cache, but couldn't fit it under 1000. If you can find a $200 off EPP coupon, then I'd say go that route and upgrade some things just to get you at 1000, so it still comes up almost same price.
-
What is a better upgrade for protection of future technology? 128MB video card or 1.8ghz processor?
Thanks for your time. -
You only need the gfx card for gaming and simulation work. I'd get the 1.8ghz since you're not doing much of either correct?
-
Try the Vostro. A good configuration with the Nvidia card and $100 cheaper price.
-
I don't like the all black look of the Vostro. I would however like for the keyboard keys to be black like that of the 1501...can I do this on the 1420? meaning switch out the keyboard for an aftermarket black one?
-
I would guarandamntee that it would void the warranty.

Good Point! mcs6
Does anyone have the 1420 jet black that can share some opinions on the all gray inside?
I've reconfigured...
added a 1.8ghz, dropped the bag, dropped the camera, switched to 1280x screen. ships 8/2 for $871 before tax.
Still seems like a better deal than anything at Bestbuy for those specs, you can't beat 2gb and 160gb h/d for that price...IMO -
I can almost guarantee you Best Buy will rip you off. I wouldn't buy a laptop from there. I'm guessing the interior will be like the 1520, so go skim those reviews and see what you think.

Smooth: Are you going through the EPP site? If so, looks good. I did the 6 cell and 9 cell battery cuz it was only $79 more for both, so I can have the 6 cell for play time, and the 9 cell if I need to use it for 3-4 hours.
