I have a brand new Inspiron 1420 bought last month. I checked the HDD status with the help of SpinRite

I ran the level one test in the SpinRite (by booting from spinrite CD) i.e. Examine The Surface. Test displayed nothing abnormal except the Seek Errors. I have three partitions. two 40 GB & one 70GB. I ran the test for the 70Gb as well the 40GB system.

For 70GB Partition Under SMART system Monitor, following are the details of the seek errors :

    Error Count : 207,994
    Minimum : 1011
    Error Rate : 1403
    Maximum : 1840

Also the Seek errors current/max value was : 35/35 with raw data indicating : 0000020066C2B8

Detailed technical log was also mentioning the same seek errors details as above.

under Graphic Status Display there were no sectors detected like :
    R-recovered
    B-defective
    U-Unrecovered

I forgot the excat seek error rate for the 40 GB system drive, but twas half as of the 70GB roughly. there also no R-recovered, B-defective or U-Unrecovered sectors found.

I am not getting why the seek error rate is so high on such brand new HDD. I think Seek error rate ariases only when physical damage is there or thermal widening of the HDD. I called the Dell Support, they ask me to run the test from Dell diagnosis CD(by booting from it). The test showed nothing error. thats retarded.

Then I downloaded HDD inspector pro, Active smart. all these softwares are indicating the seek rate errors are there. They were giving the errors like, some imp characters of the HDD degraded & it might crash.

I again called the Dell Support, they said they don't believe in the third party software results 7 hence replacement is not possible. WTF.....

What u ppl say, dont u think the seek error rate if 1403 is abnormal? What i can do to get a new drive.

Just call and tell them it is making awful clicking sounds. They will mail you out a new one.

Edit: I guess its to late. They already have it noted you are looking for a replacement.

    Good luck.
