Well, my inspiron 1420 finally arrived today, and I must say it's quite impressive. It feels light, but very solid too. It has a nice SEC display with no graininess at all, so I'm very relieved. I would like to point out some things though:

    1) It arrived with a keyboard in SPANISH!!! What is dell thinking? Hopefully I wont have to return this laptop to change it.
    2) The battery is slightly loose, but nothing serious.
    3) The battery charge light indicators dont work (they wont light up). I guess I'll have to ask Dell for a replacement battery.
    4) There seems to be a SIM Card-like slot in the laptop, right under the battery. I hadnt read anything about that, so does anyone have an idea what it's about?

SPANISH?? Could you post some pics of it?

The battery on my D830 is a bit loose too. It does jiggle around, but obviously does not sit flush in the housing and sinks a bit when you depress it. Solved (if you don't want to send it back) by some wads of card or paper in the battery slot.

What do you mean the battery meter won't work? When you press the button, it won't light up?

The SIM Card slot is for your WWAN provider's SIM, if you opted for one.

    1) You can put in a new keyboard yourself in about 5 minutes.

    3) Come to think of it, the battery charge light indicators on my 9 cell never work either... Hrmm...

    4) That is indeed a SIM card slot. You can add WWAN via the availible slot under the keyboard, and if you service needs a SIM card you slide it in there.

my 9 cell lights don't work either...don't care (i have enough brain space to remember my charge, health info avail from BIOS)

i've already have had a bad hdd, optical drive...have a slightly grainy screen but now too lazy to send in for that and the battery...wtf.

What do you mean by "pressing the button"? There's nothing in the battery itself, but the 4 light indicators that dont turn on.

About the SIM card... I didnt request anything related to mobile broadband. I guess maybe the slot comes by default?

Here are some pics of the keyboard in spanish:

The option for a spanish keyboard was avaliable, but I chose english (even the operating system is in english). It was even confirmed by phone (it's not the first time I order a Dell). When I was unboxing the laptop I was worried about getting a grainy screen, battery wobble, the whining processor......(you know, problems discussed here). BUT i never thought that they would screw up with the keyboard.... It didnt even cross my mind. So now i have a perfectly working laptop with a mistaken keyboard. This is truly annoying, I really do hope ocellaris is right and it can be changed without sending the laptop.

I'd be tempted just to keep the keyboard as is if you're happy with everything else...It's kinda cool in a weird sort of way.

Well that would make it quite annoying! I'd just assumed that all the keys would basically be in the same place, just labeled in Spanish. Best of luck to you!

Welcome to my world ;). Same with Japanese keyboards, good thing I'm used to the US keyboard layout. So it doesn't really matter what is printed on the keys as long as I have the US keyboard layout enabled. But it can be annoying at times when looking for not so frequently used symbols..

Called Dell. They apologized for the mistake and are sending an english keyboard ASAP. A Dell technicial will replace it. :)
