You can try underclocking, low battery modes etc. when you are only doing simple task. Assuming a 6 cell battery, it should be lasting more than 2 hours under those circumstances. The battery in my 1500 lasts 3-4 hours with simple tasks and 2 hours when gaming.

sorry, forgotten to mention.. it is a 6 cell batt..
what u mean about underclocking is choosing the power plan??
im really curious because it last less than 2hrs my batt. -
With dim setting and casual wifi web browsing, I am getting near 3 hours with the 6 cell.
-
Mine lasts about 3 1/2 - 4 hours on full bright screen, wifi on, etc. 6-cell battery.
-
same here... 3.5-4hrs
-
gunner and val 32, how u can get that long???
can u suggest why mine only can get 2hrs??
is it because of the battery??
or is it because, Dell deliver this 1420 already update my bios, where no more teeee sound but trade off is consume battery faster??? -
Try making sure your battery setting is set to "Dell recommended". It's possible that it is on "High Performance".
Also, try lowering the screen brightness to about mid-bright. -
Which CPU do you have in your 1420? Those with longer time are with T7100 or higher. The T7xxx processors have lower energy consumption.
-
I've got a T7100.
-
I get just over 5 hours with the 9 cell with wifi on

I get 9 hours on my 9 cell as well. I use the power saver plan on Vista, but adjust the plug-in values to not sleep the screen so soon. Also turn off Vista Aero and any transparency bullcrap.
