It seems to me that the 1420 is the least popular of the Dell line, are there any specific reasons for this? Anything I should be considering to cancel my order for a 1420?

Nope. They are a 14'' laptop. I haven't seen any chronic problems with them.

it is a great laptop and 14.1 is the sweat spot between size and power IMO.

and I think Dell recently replaced its Vram and it's now GDDR3 like these XPS.

so it is a very well balanced laptop now.

finally , you should choose the WXGA+ LCD since the WXGA one is not as good.

Well, for the screen.. I went with the normal WXGA one, there is alot of different lights here in my room, and almost every other place I plan to use it at. So i figured the glossy screen may be a little bit too shiny to be viewed well.

I have the 1420 for about 6 months and I love it. I couldn't afford the xps1330 and only 1280 x 1024 is available. I don't want a 15" since it is too big. Therefore, I chose the 1420 with 1440 x 900. It is the right size for what I do. I wish DDR3 for the 8400 was an option back then. Oh well, I have a desktop and a e1705 for games ;)

Err... the graphic memory used in the 1420 GPU has always been gddr3.

I dunno I don't like smaller laptops, I have big meathooks for hands.

Also they're mighty expensive for such a small screen...but if you're looking for good portability and decent battery life and don't want to carry around something bigger, they're probably just your ticket.

Is that right? What I heard was DDR2 for 1420.

I`ve had mine about 5 months, and so far there have been no problems. The choice for a 14` laptop should be based on your needs and personal preferences. If you research this forum you`ll find the 1420 in comparison to others does not have numerous problems. I have found it to be reliable and a good value for the cost. I do think it`s a little heavy for a 14`, but not really an issue.

I'm pretty sure the 1420 used GDDR2, or apparently not anymore at least.

I don't see why. The Vostro 1400 is an awesome laptop, and if I were to get an Inspiron, it would be the 1420.

I'm pretty sure that the Dell 1400/1420 use the DDR3 version of the 8400m GS

The 1500/1520 on the other hand use the DDR2 8600m GT
