Back in Feb of this year I purchased a 1420 with an 8400M GS in it. Not needing that kind of “power” (subjective) anymore I went to Dell to see what the rate for a new one would be configured (near) the same. I wanted to get an idea for what mine may be worth. I was a little shocked to see you can no longer get them with dedicated video.

Did I miss something? Does anyone have any info on this?

Am I dumb and was looking at the wrong ones?

There is another thread going on about the changes in configurations . . . it is definitely annoying the way that different options keep disappearing and reappearing. Due to the Nvidia fiasco, I am glad that that option is off the table for now. Hopefully to be replaced with an ATI card or something.

You can probably still get one with a card at the outlet however.

Probably they are going to be phasing the 1420 out.

Please allow me to hijack my own thread

It has already been RMA'd once for that. The repair receipt read that they reseated a ribbon cable or something. But it was over heating to well over 80c and artifacting like a mother. I had to force minimum power setting and run it on a cooler to keep it usable. I was certain the card was malfunctioning. I was shocked to read the repair receipt when it said they reseated a ribbon cable. I didnt understand...

But whatever... I'm glad to here they are no longer putting the 8400's in them. That thing was so freaking hot you could cook an egg on it.

The XPS M1330 seems to have issues with the 8400 as well. This could be a reason why we haven't seen any updates for those brands of laptops. In the future there might be other 14 inch notebooks, I heard maybe a Studio 14 in the works even after it got shelved months ago.

Pretty much any 8000 series nvidea Gpu is experiencing higher than average failure rates at the moment. Mine idles around 57-60c and peaks to 95c under load. I am amazed at that. My former desktop GPU (a 6600gt) would never see much over 60c and I had that thing clocked.

I am shocked that they basically did not repair your laptop. I would definitely specify that they card had failed and had to be replaced. It requires a new motherboard (pricey) which is probably why they would avoid the fix if they could seem to get it working.

I would stay away from nvidia for now. Onboard graphics or ATI. For the record, I am disappointed with the low level cards at this time anyway. They fetch a nice price premium but barely outperform a lot of on board systems.

What do you use to measure the temperatures? Which program that is?
