I received my 1420 yesterday, but I realized something... the right side of the computer makes a lot of noise. It sounds like a DVD/CD is being read, but it's not. The noise sounds like it's coming from the "Enter" or "Backspace" button area.

Does anyone know what this sound is?

Is the CPU located on the right side? I'm assuming it's the CPU fan.

Well that's hear the hard drive is located, maybe it's the sound of your HD reading and writing? The CPU is located the bottom centre of the notebook IIRC. From my experience though, the loudest part of my laptop is where the airflow comes out.

I think you're right. Didn't somebody say that Vista runs your hard drive for about a week to make it optimal to your needs or something??? Wow, this is pretty loud for a hard drive, it's annoying.

I do get some clicky sounds from the top right ( that is where the hard drive is ) but its never bothersome...

I do too, about every 30 minutes. I thought the processor was there and was worried, now that I know it's the HD it makes sense...

Top right is where the HD and fan are. The area you are talking about is where the CPU is located (at least on my Vostro 1400).

    Cheers...

How can it be different when they are the same thing?

Anyone have the diagram/picture of the inside? I'll have to see myself now. :(

EDIT: Just checked for the Inspiron 1420 and the HD is at top right of laptop. Are they using different MOBO's for the Vostro's then?? I doubt it.
