So my cooling fan died the other day and I purchased a replacement on eBay, same part# N432 and it said compatible with inspiron 1420. After taking apart my ENTIRE laptop (side rant: I cant believe the amount of screws that had to be removed to get to the fan - never buying a dell again!) I find that that the original fan looks different from my replacement as my replacement has a large silver ring around the fan with a chunk that looks like a grid sticking out...just like the picture in the dell refurb fan below:
DELL Refurbished: System Fan : Computer Components | Dell
See the silver part on the left with the grid looking thing....that is not on my original fan therefore this replacement will not fit into my laptop...i don't understand! Someone help me please, my laptop is in pieces and I dont know why even the dell websites refurb fan has this silver piece...

now that i inspect the replacement fan it looks like I can take it out of the silver loop and insert it into the original frame. Have to go to the store to get eyeglass screwdriver..

screws dont seem to want to come out...!!!

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Long story short: you have a 1420 with Intel graphics and you bought the heatsink for a 1420 with Nvidia graphics. Good luck on swapping the fans, I suppose.
