I am really concerned about some of the stated build qualities of M1330 units.

With this in mind, would anyone recommend either one or should I go with an HP or Toshiba laptop?

There is that risk that the build quality may drop if dell tries to build them a bit too quickly to satisfy demand (dell top brass will be so happy with the demand!). But if you get something with a bad quality you have every right to complain.

Hp really has a bad build quality. But your 1420 would have worse build quality then M1330. XPS is kinda supposed to have better everything then the normal Inspiron lineup. I have had good luck with Toshiba and a few people I know also liked there Toshiba, but it seems on the Enternet a few people (not on this website), do not like Toshiba. Get the R400 it is really nice.

Build quality is not impacted by volume. Its all scalable. My main factor of choosing between 1330 and 1420 would be price...If I have the money...1330. If not, 1420 can offer similar performance at hundreds less

Yeah I just checked out the 1420...it kinda feels like cheap plastic all around. I have to say at least with the HP's there's a sturdiness and visible appeal to it.

I'm looking at a customized HP DV2500 or a Dell 1330. Tough decision here. I adore Toshiba but they have got to get into a more aggressive competitive frame of mind. Their build quality is top-top notch but geez, at a certain point the granted premium shouldn't be nearing 50-100% again of the total cost in comparison with other lines on the market with cheaper build quality.

As far as I understand, dv2500 max memory is 2Gb. Max memory for 1420 and 1330 is 4GB so you have more scalabilty. That was the main reason why I decided for a Dell
