So I made the mistake of getting Vista on my 1420 and its pissing the hell out of me at this point. My question is I'm thinking of dual booting either openSUSE or Fedora 9 and I was wondering if either of these have considerable compatibility problems with the 1420. Ubuntu is not rly my cup of tea, but i can't stand staying on vista

    Intel Core2Duo T7250
NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M GS (256 DDR2 i believe though i'll edit if thats not true)
    14.1" WXGA+
    DVD+/-RW Drive
    Webcam
Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini Card (again I think)

I'll add other info as needed

I'm pretty sure Ubuntu works with it, but I'm not sure about the others. Have you done some Google searching?

It uses to many resources with not enough gain IMHO, but it works for me.

I use vmware to run ubuntu. Not sure if you want to do it that way.

What is wrong with Vista to be honest? I think it runs pretty well. When did you get your machine or installed vista? It runs kinda sluggish at the beginning. Once everything is indexed and optimized, it runs pretty fast.

Also, you have WXGA+. Is it grainy? Is it AUO or LG?

Maybe you could try live CD (or live DVD) versions, and see how well they work.

Speaking from expirence on my vostro 1500 (similar laptops) most everything works out of the box on fedora 8 where as ubuntu 8.04 much less things worked out of the box. I am waiting for the official release of fedora 9 to upgrade, but i would go with fedora over ubuntu.

    Thanks everyone
for the record I have issues w/ vista just cuz i dont use my laptop for extended periods of time and its rly just not worth the boot time + resource hogging. In truth I havent had too much real trouble w/ vista, i just wrote the post in a fit of frustration ^_^

just checking, but Fedora 9 comes out in a week or so amirite?

    @myrcgarage
I havent actually checked the maker of my LCD, it is a touch grainy but i only noticed it cuz i was looking for it, its relatively unnoticeable otherwise

Well, if you follow the NBR Vista Tips and Tweaks Guide, found here, that may help you out. My Vista boot time is around 30 seconds.
