Is there any major/significant differences between these two models.

With same specs, the price on each is pretty much the same.

The design of both models look identical.

I know you get to customize the lid color on the inspiron. Could the 1400 be better built than 1425 since it's in dell's business line?

Well, compared with the 1520, the 1525 is lighter but less durable, with plastic casing instead of metal. It also has HDMI, and no dedicated graphics option, unlike the 1520 (and the similar 1500). So... make of that what you will.

EDIT: You are talking about the new/upcoming 1425 rather than the current 1420, right?

The build quality is probably the same, as crash said the difference is in the customer support. My understanding is that you are much more likely to get North-American based support with the business machine.

Other than that there is nothing other than mild variances in configuration options and the color.

ok, the 1420 and 1400 are pretty much the same except for color, marketing, sales, pricing, options, preinstalled software, and support teams. I've heard some claim that the 1400 is slightly better-built, but I'm a bit skeptical. The 1420 is quite solid in any case.

yes, I've seen a 1420 with a black lid and it looks identical to a 1400 except of the silver in the 1420.

also, about the strike zone in dell business laptop, how well do those actually work?

    very short: it's a rubber foot -.-

long: its a rubber foot that they have at the four corners of the base, but this one is a fifth one glued under the hard drive. (really, its nothing.) Open the hard drive bay, nothing special is there. it's a marketing gimmick.

    it's in the inspirons too.

1400 has NO BLOATWARE unless you ask for it where as the 1420 is full of it and the VOSTRO line is pertty :)
