First extract the ATI Catalyst 10.6 Drivers then enter Device Manager and use the "Have Disk" method to update the display driver. Have disk method is a way to install a driver that does not have any setup program to install itself automatically. In principle what you are doing is showing Windows where drivers are located. Driver installation scripts are written in *.inf files so a driver must have these files, and this file is located inside:

    Drivers\Display\XP_INF\

    of the extracted directory.

To access the driver update follow the steps below:
1)Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2)The System Properties window will open. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

3)The Device Manager window will open. Double-click Display adapters.

4)Right-click on whatever display adapter it shown and click "Update Driver"

5)Select the following option when the Hardware Update Wizard asks to connect to Windows Update: No, not this time. Click Next.

6)Select the following option: Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then click Next.

7)Select the Don’t search, I will choose the driver to install option, and then Next

    7.1) UNCheck "Show compatible hardware"

8)Click on the Have Disk... button, and then click the Browse button.

9)Browse to the directory where you extracted the driver above i.e. the Drivers\Display\XP_INF subdirectory.

10)Locate and highlight the the CX100944.inf file then Click the Open button

11)Click the OK button. A window listing all of the available display types should open. Select the " ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470", and then click the Next button.

12)The operating system will install the driver. Click the Finish button when done.

As I know most of the N4010 drivers works with N5010 so you can try to download my most up-to-date set of N4010 drivers from the above links. Since I don't own an N5010 so you have to tell me which drivers doesn't works and tell me what particular hardware is used and I can try locate the missing for you and work out a complete set of XP drivers for the N5010.

To install the AHCI driver you need to enable AHCI in BIOS during the XP installation - in order to avoid BSOD upon the XP installation you have to:

    1) Splitstream the AHCI driver into the XP installation CD
    or
    2) Copy the AHCI drivers into a floppy disk and press F6 when you see a message in the status line that says in the very beginning of the XP install process.

If you don't have a floppy drive you have to use method 1) and most people use nLite to splitstream additional drivers into the original XP installation CD.

For use in a laptop I would say ATA and AHCI mode doesn't make any performance different so you can just ignore it if you think the procedures to enable AHCI under XP are too complicated.

Battery cannot be recognize under XP, this is an unresolved issue, you also need to disable "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" from Device Manager or else your CPU will keep a 20 - 25% loading at all time. No XP Quickset driver for any HM55/57 chipset laptop from Dell. Only AHCI driver needed slipstream, others can install after the OS installation.

reddragon123, I am not aware of such an application, all I know is that the battc.sys and cmbatt.sys are the drivers behind this problem and they are native drivers came from Microsoft. Both Vista / Wndows 7 version of the same drivers work well without any problem.

shweatha, can you post a screen shoot of your Device Manager? Are you using N4010 or N5010?

shweatha, for Audio you need to execute the "ATI HDMI DP Audio Driver 10.6_XP32-64.exe", for Dispay please follow post #3, for the WiFi Card you need to identify the module from the quotation and get back.

For the Audio driver you can ignore the unable to install warning - it was due to you don't have .NET Framework installed so the program failed to install Catalyst Install Manager (which is not required) but the ATI HDMI Audio driver is successfully installed anyway so you should only have 2 un-identify drivers left in the Device Manager .

For the Display I've added step 7.1) to #3 please follow and try again and you should see the list of adapters, there are many entries of HD5470 within the list and please remember to choose the one with "Mobility" in the name.

Have you figure out what kind of WiFi adapter module yet?

What you are missing is the HDMI Audio driver but not the sound card driver so you can here the music but if you attempt to connect using HDMI cable to your other AV equipment you won't able to use it without the HDMI driver proper installed.

For the display all the adapter descriptions are inside the CX100944.inf but you won't see any file named HD5470 so did you manage to open that file?

I need to see your display card's "Device Instance Id" please send me a screen shoot of it, you can shown it from Device Manager -> Right Click on the adapter then select "Properties" then click on the "Details" tab.

Your card's Device Instance Id is different, are you using the HD5470 1GB version? Anyways, please replace the CX100944.INF with the attached and try again.

There are many ati2xxx but I don't think there is a file just named ati2m

It should accept the path but I've encountered it might ask many times again and again for different files, so keep on pointing it to B100667 and finally your drivers will get installed.

Below is the complete file listing of all the driver files, if all are match in your side then you have nothing left:

    Code:

Display drivers are named "ATI Catalyst 10.6 Drivers Modified for Mobility HD 5470" in the "Need Manual Install" subdirectory. Basically you need to install all the drivers.

That is the ATI Catalyst Installer, you don't need it, can be ignored, the HDMI driver should install without problem.

How come you got a Stealth II G460 for the display? I have not seen such an option for the N4010!

ashok4u and shweatha, unfortunately your Service Tag cannot confirm the exact display card type, they can be either one of the following:

    1) ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470
    2) ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
    3) ATI Mobility Radeon HD 550v
    4) Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD

Could you check from your purchase order see which video card you've ordered for your laptop?

Hope my answer in #8 fixed your system slow issue.

I would like to say this is not a Dell problem, you will get the same result with Acer or whatever brand while you want to install Windows XP with the latest hardware.

I have no performance issue under XP. Under what condition you find it slow? Did you manage to enable AHCI mode by install the SATA AHCI driver? You have to slipstreaming the AHCI drivers into the XP installation CD and enable AHCI mode in BIOS before install the OS.

As far as disk performance is in concern, it should make no difference whether you are using AHCI or ATA mode... However, I've heard people complaint of slow performance of the whole system like yours if failed to enable AHCI in N4010 / N5010. I believe you may not successful slipstream the AHCI driver into the install CD. Did you unpack the "R264761 HM57 32Bit AHCI Driver.exe" before you attempt to slipstream? You cannot just include the .exe and expect nLite able to slipstream the driver, you have to unpack it first, and if success, nLite should prompt you to select the AHCI textmode driver, can you remember if you seen something like this while creating the install CD? If you failed to include the AHCI driver and have enabled AHCI in BIOS before the installation, you should not able to install Windows and should encountered BSOD during the install process, so I am confused why you encounter BSOD after installed Windows? Another possibility is that you forgot to enable AHCI in BIOS before OS install...
