Tempted to snag a cheap i5 proc off ebay instead of waiting for the new sandybridge 14Rs to pop up on the outlet and upgrading. Can any of you 14R owners with i5 chips post idle/load temps? Wondering if they're going to be drastically higher than my i3 350.

Though I don't own a 14R, an i5 should be around the same temperature ranges as your i3, as both are 35 watt. The i5 with Turbo Boost would result in higher temperatures but 14R were sold with i5, so the cooling system should be up to the task.

Make sure you properly ground yourself. IIRC, for the 14/15/17R you have to flip over the motherboard to get to the heatsink. Also while you are there, clean out the heatfins, fans. Use at least 99% anhydrous alcohol to clean off the heatsink and the old thermal paste.

    Good luck

It's rated the same but I wouldn't be surprised if it ran warmer seeing as it turbos to ~700mhz faster than my current chip. Not sure it's worth the money though.

Already had the laptop apart since Dell decided the hard drive doesn't need to be easily accessible. Wish I had remounted the heatsink when I took everything apart since the fan runs more than I'd like already.

For single threaded applications, an i5 will outperform an i3 due to Turbo Boost. Whether or not you want to upgrade is up to you. If it were up to me, getting an i5 is worth it just for the Turbo Boost.

The drive isn't that awful to get to, tedious yes, but maybe I've serviced too many N_010 series laptops (14,15,17R) laptops at my work.
