I'm looking at a computer for my teenage niece. That should give you an indication of the type of use it will be getting. Budget is less than $600, so an entry level machine.

I was thinking Inspiron but wasn't sure if the newer 15R model is worth the slight upgrade cost from the 15 model. Then I went over to small biz and saw the Vostro 3500. They all have roughly the same build quality, correct? Any other differences I should consider?

I know it's a pretty open-ended question, just wanted to get some quick feedback. Thanks in advance.

Specs wise these two laptops are indeed very similar. The one thing that might make the Inspiron 15R slightly more desirable for a teenage girl is that it's a little more attractive and does have color options. If it's not going to be a surprise, she could even choose her favorite color for the lid. The glossy screen on the Inspiron 15R is generally preferred by mainstream customers (offers brighter colors) while the matte screen on the Vostro 3500 is better for office work environment to prevent eye strain over several hours. You may get better customer service through Dell business if you have any issues through with the laptop, so a slight consideration there. Other than that I'd say you should configure similar specs for each machine and see which comes out cheaper and let the dollars difference decide. Good luck with your decision and hope your niece is thankful!
