i'm basically talking about the aluminum surface of the laptop. The bit of metal below the sd card slot seems to have been pried, forming a small lump. When i found out about it, i simply thought i have been dealt a bad hand. So, i went to the store, turns out they only have one left. They say it's brand new, but I knew it wasn't when they brought it out. (They tried to tear off the shipping label that belonged to the previous owner, and failed miserably). And when I took a look at it, it had the same problem!! Now... I don't know if that person returned it for the same reason, but the guy started to say that maybe it's the design. But it does not look like that on the official photos, and it looked ugly and unnecessary, so why would dell do that?? For the owners of the laptop, could you maybe check for me if the metal under your sd card slot is flat like the rest of the metal under the other slots??? I am pretty certain mine's a defect, but seeing two of them having the exact same problem made me wonder a bit...

In case any of you don't know what i'm talking about...

The laptop is not with me right now, so it's a picture of the laptop i found online.
Basically the red part is slightly pushed outwards, and when you move your finger across the side of the laptop, you would feel a small lump when you come across this part.

This shouldn't be normal... right? Is it common? I know it's a trivial issue, but I'm sort of a perfectionist...

No that's not normal. My first Dell had the same problem with the metal covering one of the usb ports. I asked for a replacement and they did give me a new laptop (bought it from best buy).
