I don't have much call for a notebook computer so I nabbed my daughter's old notebook when she bought a new one for college. It is a Dell Inspiron 1501 and the system reports that the processor is an AMD Athlon 64 x2 TK-53 running at 1.7 GHz.

Is there a processor that would be an upgrade for this guy? Faster? More cores?

I'm not squeamish about cracking the case for this. I've replaced motherboards on other notebooks and I have built my last few computers. No, I'm not a guru but I'm a bit beyond your basic user.

    Thanks.

I think you can go up to the TL-68, but it's expensive for what you're getting. The TL-64 is probably the best value, but if you're not CPU limited in whatever it is you're doing, I wouldn't bother doing this upgrade at all. Maybe buy an SSD instead.

Found the TL-68 on ebay for $70 including shipping. Hadn't thought about the SSD, I just upgraded this computer a year ago to a 500GB hard drive. An SSD of usable size is about $200.

Primarily, I'm looking for a bit more pep, to make is more like my desktop in response times.

That's really strange. I edited this post last night and now the edit is missing .. . unless I slipped into another universe without realizing it . . . .

I found that I can get a 125 GB SSD for about $80. That might be the way to go.

    Hi,

As Commander_ Wolf mentioned, the Turion 64 TL-60 (2.0 GHz / 1 MB) is the best processor which was tested in Inspiron 1501. Though we have not shipped this system with SSD drives, as this system is designed to support SATA technology, you may install the 2.5” SSD with appropriate connector or enclosure.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks and regards,

Commander_Wolf talked about the TL-64 and TL-68, will those not work?

FWIW, I've never actually tried it, but my Google-fu turned up at least one person who claims to have tried it. Of course, YMMV.

The entire TL-58 to TL-68 line is based on the same die, so I dunno why it wouldn't work; Dell typically doesn't lock out such similar CPUs even if the laptop didn't originally ship with them.
