Looking from pictures it's hard to tell, but are the case designs on both notebooks pretty close to the same (besides color)? They sort of look like they are to me.

I can get them configured exactly the same and the Vostro 1000 comes out $50 more than the Inspiron 1501. So I'm wondering if there is anything better about the Vostro that I should be paying $50 for when the internals are exactly the same on both.

Well, it looks better IMO, but other than that they are supposed to be the same.

I own a Inspiron 1501, Vostro 1500, and Thinkpad T60. I would say the build quality of the 1501 is slightly above average. I paid $374 for a new Dell Inspiron 1501 so I can't complain. It's viewed as their lower tiered products. I would put them in the Compaq Presario and Toshiba entry level laptops.

The Vostro is very sturdy and the T60 is just a beast. If you can get a good deal on a 1501 i'd say buy it.

Thanks for the comments. It is a sweet deal, my brother works for dell so I'm getting my 1501 for $424 (CAD) with a duel core AMD (1.7 GHz), 1 GB, 80 GB and a 1150 in it. Hard to pass up that deal.

Sounds good to me. What can I really expect for such a cheap price. It's just a secondary laptop for my wife. I have a HP nc8430 with a x1600 (256 MB dedicated) in it. Sounds like this one should do the trick for her.

Thinkpads are so awesome, I'm actually getting this one (Inspiron) to replace a T42 that had a run in with glass of coke. The glass of coke won. :( I would get another one and might have even got another one (T6x) instead of this HP. But I couldn't justify the price this time around.

    Thanks again!
