Guys, just wanna inform you all that the latest BIOS dated 25/12/2007 for Inspiron 1520 has been released. Grab yours today

Release Title: BIOS: Dell Inspiron 1520 System BIOS, English, Inspiron 1520, A04
    Release Date: 25/12/2007
    Criticality: Recommended
    Description: Dell Inspiron 1520 FlashBIOS

    Fixes/Enhancements
    ------------------
    1. On N-Series Platforms, removed SLIC table and pointer to resolve OS
    bug with KMS activation.
    2. Added Wi-Fi Catcher support for Dell 1395 wireless card.

I believe the enchancements are more than just the two listed items here. i did notice a few new settings in BIOS. headphone noise seems to be very much reduced BUT system's high pitch noise is still audible as usual. i did not perform the electrical tape insulation method posted here. havent had the time to do it. but seems like this BIOS fixed it, or maybe just me.

    Let me know your findings.

    :D YAY..

Suddenly the last few days, I'm excited when I see BIOS updates - when usually I'm completely against them.

So you say the headphone jack noise is gone eh? Hmm gonna have to do some more testing! :D

    Thanks for the notice

    It works great!

It was so simple to flash too!

The only difference I notice thus far is the interference from the headphone jack is greatly reduced.

In my previous post, I said that the interference from the headphone jack was reduced greatly. I would like to completely retract that statement. It's whining just as much as it used to. Thank God for my USB-compatible stereo system...

Hi everyone, complete laptop noob here and I'm a bit confused (imagine that.) I just received a 1520 on Dec 20, and when it boots, it says BIOS A04. Does this mean I don't need to download and install the new BIOS released today? Or are there different versions of A04? Thanks and I apologize in advance for my own laptop ignorance. :)

You got your laptop recently so it was already loaded with A04 whereas we received our laptops before A04 was even released.

will give it a try. the high pitched whine is due to the CPU power saving which supposidly goes away when you're on high performance, but it never has for me.

The CPU whine happens when the processor goes into deep sleep states. Basically C3/C4 or what ever.

Basically, it's grouchy as hell and starts throwing bottles of whiskey at you when it's trying to go to sleep and/or waking up - to dumb it down to make it understandable.

The BIOS update won't hurt.. only takes a moment and it's entirely idiot proof. Pretty much if the machine looses power or is interrupted, then $%^& hits the fan. Otherwise it's as easy as pie. Make sure the battery has plenty of power, and you have AC power, run it and leave it alone for a few minutes then come back and it's sitting on a login screen waiting.

So far all is fine. I ain't getting any noticeable CPU whine right now (RMclock is closed and has been for the last 4 hours). Not sure if the update fixed it or it's just playing games with me. System seems just as rock solid and stable.

What is with that SLIC table thing ? It is the table used for activating Vista without needing to connect to the internet..... But they were telling in SP1 of Vista - they were intending to reduce the number of illegal copies running around making use of this kind of activation..... Are these both related ?
