Hi.
I've had my 1520 for about 2 weeks now and I've noticed on the bottom left palm rest there it is a bit of creaking. I think its the part where the silver touches the black right beside the mute button where the glue is weak or something. Anyway after reading everywhere that this laptop is so solid, and that there is no creaking (besides the screen), should I be worried? I was really hoping for it to last me a couple of years. Is it considered "defective" enough for a replacement, since I do have a warranty?
-
mine does it too. its not defective, its just not the best designed.
-
See I mean I wouldn't mind it if lets say I dropped it or had been carrying it around with me a lot. But It's pretty much just been sitting on my desk for the past 2 weeks. Oh well. We'll wait a year and see what happens. Just hopefully it won't start to lift and separate.
-
K here's another question. Anyone after lets say about 2 months of ownership and carrying around NOT have any creaks at all? (besides screen)
-
not a single creak at all here, and this laptop goes with me everywhere.
On the other hand, I am having problems with paint wear. -
Oh, so some other people do have that same thing. I never brought it up though because I figured it was so small potatoes that not even worth the effort on my part, nor the eye rolls of experienced uses everywhere.
Tell you what though - my crick is all but gone, and it has been a since Sept 18th. It was pretty pronounced at first, and now I don't ever notice it - though it's not from getting used to it.
I think it has worked itself out or worn down enough that whatever was irritated there is no longer a factor.
Not a problem though - I'm much too in love to let that get in the way....though honestly at first, it put me off a bit (and made me start to wonder if anything was going to 'crick'). -
It's perfectly normal for casings to creek. All monitors, T.V's, printers etc do it. It's just both pieces of plastic rubbing. The type of finish and paint applied can cause it to creek, and sometimes not to.
I resolved it by applying thin pieces of duct-tape to where the screws hold both parts together (palm rest/chassis). To do it I had to open the machine, but now it doesn't creek anywhere and nor can you see or feel the duct-tape in anyway.
I've had to do this to thousands of my electronics, because I simply hate the creaking sounds. But sometimes those sounds work their self naturally. -
A silver sharpie almost matches the paint, but without sparkles...
sometimes i use it to touch up the corners, but it comes off within a day of being in my bag.
:S now i know why the old inspirons had those ugly bumpers
i don't think its glue, more of clips in that area. -
Just a quick chime in: mine creaks in that one exact same spot as well.
Weird. But apparently common. -
I've had my 1520 since the beginning of August, used it almost every day, and take it with me at least once a week, and so far nothing squeaks. I have a little paint wear on the palmrests, but it's only minimal. I also get oil marks on the lid from opening and closing it that are hard to get off. Other than those trivial things, I haven't had any problems and I love this computer.

S'funny the creak is just that one left bottom palm rest area. Oh well if it happens alot and its not the laptop falling apart then i'm fine. As long as I know its just screws squeaking and not glue unsticking then I guess I'll just deal with it.
Here's another question. Is the paint covered by the warranty? I heard somewhere it was. Any idea? -
Yeah, mine does that too, and only in the lower left palm rest area. Still hasn't collapsed after four months, so I'm not too concerned about it.
Not sure about paint and the warranty, but I doubt it. -
Theres no glue people. It's just the painted pieces rubbing. If you have a TV, push on the casing, I can bet it will do the same thing. 80% of electronics do that, it's just friction.
