I just ordered a Inspiron 1520 with 1 gb of ram (667, 1x1gb) and I was wondering which brand of ram to get to upgrade to 2gb. I was hoping only having to purchase a single 1 gb stick but I was wondering what brand (what brand does dell use so I can match, I know they don't make their own ram).

Or if it doesn't matter? (I know that in building desktops ram that doesn't match can possibly cause crashes).

    Thanks!

Are you sure you are getting a single 1GB stick? Typically (unless you specifically state this in the customization portion of the build) it will consist of 2x matching 512MB sticks.

I would wait till you get the laptop to order the memory as you can match it.

The brand should be printed on it yes.

Most laptops these days support dual channel - so you will want matching sticks of ram.

The best way to do this is to look for the actual memory label and do a froogle.com search or something for the part number. Most companies (dell and apple for instance) put a (dell/apple) sticker directly on top of the manufacture sticker.

My memory is Samsung according to CPUZ. I'm pretty sure you can just get the same speed 667Mhz in any brand you like, but try to match the latency (5-5-5-15) because in dual channel I think it uses the same latency as your highest latency ram.

dell just uses samsung ram which is straight from their factory but any brand will do. Just make sure to get ddr2-667 ram.

you have 2x512. to get to 2gb you would need to get 2x1gb sticks. there are only 2 slots to upgrade on the laptop. That means you have to remove one. You should buy the 2gb as a kit, 2 sticks sold in a package. That way they come off the same assembly line are completely paired for each other. You will have the least issues that way. I bought mine for 80 bucks from newegg. Don't remove 1 stick and get another 1 gb stick. then you would have 1.5gb. get 2 together.
