It's a webcam. Perhaps your expectations were set too high? These things have super tiny sensors, non too high quality lens, and most likely too many pixels packed into it.

Decrease the image resolution to 640x480 or lower, uncheck the option of low light boost and you should have a much smoother experience. Expect 1-2 FPS at 2 megapixel settings.

The webcam on my Vostro is rather crappy. The old Logitech QuickCams I have had since 1995 were much sharper.

But, I got it for free, so I can't complain too much. I guess it's not only mine.

those buiilt in one are crappy. so far, the 2.0 mp of compal one i've used is impressed. The one on my asus is good color and quality but frame rates sucks.

I'm about to get the E1520 for my aunt tomorrow. I'll see how's the wc gonna b like though. :D

My webcam is actually great. My fiancee has an external USB Logitech one and its awful compared to mine.
If you're video chatting the quality can also depend on the internet connection.

Mine is pretty laggy and I get crap frame rates even at the lowest resolutions (never seen it do more than 8-10fps). Also, the audio on video recordings doesn't really sync up well.

I've tried messing with the settings but it won't even let me touch the low light compensation option. I thought that perhaps I could lower the exposure/shutter speed even if it meant having a darker image but I can't change that either.

I guess it's alright for taking pictures in good lighting conditions, though...

I have the one on the 1520. Mine produces a very sharp good quality picture. Maybe they use different manufacturers for the webcams like they do lcd panels?

If they did that they would have more than one driver set on the download page.

The problem is probably due to 2 factors:

    1) The resolution is set too high (try setting it to a lower resolution like 320x240)
    2) The drivers for the built-in web cam try to constantly adjust brightness and contrast and track faces (if you have the option turned on). I have a logitech USB notebook cam that allows you to turn this stuff off, and it makes a huge difference in frame rates.

It's been a while since I've played with it, but you may be able to turn off some of the auto-adjust settings.
