Dell sent me out a new LCD for my Inspiron 1520 a month ago (the old one had random burnt pixels moving about the screen), and it works fine, except for the fact that the microphone array built into the laptop does not work anymore...

I've double checked the connector to ensure that it's connected and checked Vista to make sure it's enabled/working correctly and it is (even tested the mic line out to be sure that that works at least, and it does).

What I'm wondering is...how would I phrase it to Dell that either the LCD's mic connector doesn't work or the mic unit itself in the laptop is damaged? I get the feeling that...trying to convey something that complicated to tech support (you all know what I mean...) is gonna be a waste of time. Any ideas?

JUst tell them that the notebook microphone is not working. my first 1520 was shipped with the microphone and webcam not working. They took my 1520 back and sent me a brand new 1520. So dont worry about phrasing.

If they offer to swap out the whole laptop...I'd be down for that...but if they want it in just to "look it over" then no go (need it for school).

I think I'd rather have them send me the components and I'll install them myself (already replaced the LCD myself and it looks like the mic is held in by a few screws anyway so...).

Gonna give them a call Monday and see how what they say...

WTF, Mine isn't working neither. I am going to call Dell tomorrow when I come back home from school. I need this laptop for school also as my desktop is waiting for a new desk to be delivered. What are my options here with Dell? I brought this laptop in November and will that matter because they don't make 1520 anymore. I don't want to send in my laptop to dell neither. Ergh, I was going to use Skype on this.... I've always used the logitech webcams microphone for my desktops and now this **** is wack!
