This is a bit unhandy as I use standby quite a bit.

Anyway, when I bring it out of standby the display doesn't come on. I have to kill it with the power button and then turn it back on.

Could this be a driver issue?

You could try Fn+F8, unless the computer is freezing.

Definitely a driver issue. If you're using ForceWare drivers, try the stock Dell drivers and vice-versa. nVidia actually has their own set of mobile drivers up on their site now; you could give those a shot too.

    Hi All,

If you have a Dell 1520 with the same problem, you are not alone:
    Symptom:
    - Laptop suddenly goes into standby mode,
this can happen without typing on the built in keyboard,
or physically moving the laptop in any way,
while still plugged into AC power (ie: It is not the battery)

    - If you apply pressure to the palm rest area to the left of the touchpad and below the keyboard, or to the top left area above the keyboard and to the left of the "Home" button(where "inspiron 1520" is printed), you can sometimes get the laptop to come out of standby mode - but not always with the laptop display switching on.

i.e:The laptop does not freeze or crash, it just unpredictably goes into standby mode. Sometimes you can get it out of standby mode by applying pressure...
othertimes it comes out of standby but the screen remains blank (Fn-F8 does not help) - forcing you to do a "dirty" shutdown.

I dont have the answer, but the following post descibes the exact same poblem for another Dell laptop the 1550, and the solution:

Link to video of Netherlands IT program showing how to fix for Dell 5150:
    http://kassa.vara.nl/portal?_scr=kassa_artikel&number=2017734
    )

Unfortunately the Dell 1520 does not have the tabs mentioned for the 5150 fix.

These symptoms point to a physical problem - not a driver/software issue.
I wonder if Dell has a manufacturing defect, with dry solder joints, but I'm speculating here...

This problem is becoming more chronic on my 1520, and hope someone might have some useful information to followup on - or better yet a fix.

    Regards

I was able to resolve the problem by switching to different drivers. The 180.84drivers caused the issue.
