Not if you want a dedicated video card, because the 1525 only has an integrated option.

Got it on Friday. Love it! The screen looks great. It was a bit dim when I first turned it on but then I figured out the function up arrow thing and it's great! It is ever so slightly grainy under some very limited conditions but I think that's just a limitation of the graphics that are being displayed. My photos look awesome! I haven't had a great opportunity to use it much yet because I've been working 12 hr shifts (military exercise). But I will definately be giving it a workout next week.

I bought mine on 2/21, and it still hasn't come in yet. Dell Status is "In Production," and I'm getting VERY tired of waiting... the estimated delivery is 3/24, but I thought that was the absolute LATEST it would come...

    here's my build:

    -- Inspiron 1520 --
    -- Intel® Core蒂 2 Duo T5450 (1.66GHz/667Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
    -- Jet Black Matte Finish
    -- 3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
    -- Anti-glare, widescreen 15.4 inch display (1280x800)
-- Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
    -- Size: 250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
    -- Genuine Windows® XP Home
    -- Combo or DVD+RW Drive --
    -- High Definition Audio 2.0
    -- 85Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell)

Pretty happy with the purchase... but my HP is currently being held together by a C-Clamp and duct tape, so I need that daggone Dell ASAP.

XP home, XP pro waiting to install.

Bought for 418.00 shipped from the outlet as a refurb. Not a bad computer, really. This is my 3rd Dell laptop. I had a 1505 fully loaded w/ a 6800 go, an XPS M140 and then this one.
I like the dual core, a lot. This laptop seems to run cooler and is a bit more responsive. Of course, I didnt get the big video card, but it's not that important. I have 2 desktops behind me that run my games and other video intensive things. This is for lounge surfing on the couch and tuning my car.

I'm probably going to sell my 1520 here soon. Here are the specs. What do you think I should ask for it???

Cosmetically it is flawless and there are no problems with it at all. It was built and shipped to me a year ago (aug 2007).

Looking at the specs I reckon 400 would be a fair price for it.
There's still not many laptops around capable of playing games so this is a unique selling point. Even better that its 15.4 so reasonably portable, acceptable battery life, and usually runs cool and quiet.

I've also found that with new video drivers (laptop video2go) the gaming performance is probably about twice as good as when it was new. No stutters now. I am overclocking the shader clock to 1400MHZ in riva tuner but the graphics card doesn't seem to run much hotter and I've ran it for hours without it freezing.

Question, a friend of mine has the 1521. Everytime she boots her laptop it beeps for a few seconds then stops and goes into the "Choose your OS" menu. Anyone ever hear of this?

Have any of the intergrated devices on the laptop stopped working (USB, missing memory, etc). It is probably beeping to say that something isn't checking when the laptop performs the power on self test.

And on a sidenote I should be getting another 1520 ... kinda ... if I can get the shipping from canada sorted out.

I was wondering if there was an optimal cooling pad for the 1520. I've had it overheat quite a few times, and don't want to pick up a pad with the vents not matching up.

As long as the pad blows air UP, it shouldn't be a problem.

For any curious, the CPU on a Inspiron 1520 can be swapped out by the Laptop owner.

Disconnect power, and remove the battery.

Follow the Dell Manual info to pop the hinge panel cover off at the top side of the keyboard. Remove the two screws [at the top side] holding the keyboard. Pop up the keyboard to unplug the video and the MB plugs. Unplug the connector to the right and above the keyboard, and unscrew the ground wire [the screw stays with the wire]. There are two sets of very small screws to remove, two very close the the LCD and two a bit closer to the keyboard. On my Laptop these screws looked just like the ground screw over to the top and right of the keyboard, but theses screws can be pulled [they are not captive].

Pull all the screws from the bottom of the Laptop. Remove the Hard Drive and Dvd/CDRom. Remove the two screws on the rear side of the Laptop.

With the Laptop sitting in it's normal positioning, close the cover and slowly lift the cover and top surface from the base housing.

I ended up standing the top/LCD up, similar to how the LCD would be positioned. The cables to the LCD are long enough to stand on end, which gives you good access to the Heat Sink Assembly. The four screws a the CPU are clearly marked. The video tube will move enough without loosening the screws to slide the CPU sink assembly out of the base housing. [it is a good time to have three hands; one for the LCD area, one to gently lif the video cooler tibe slightly and one to move and slide out the CPU Heat Sink tube assembly.] Take a deep breath and go slowly...

Swap the CPU, apply AS5 or equivalent. Re-install Heat Sink assembly, following the pattern as marked, 1 thru 4. Set the top in place. Put the four small screw and the ground screw at the top right of the keyboard back in place. Re-install the three plugs. Re-installed the keybaord with the two screws at the top side [towards the LCD] of the keyboard.

Turn the Laptop over and re-install all the screws on the bottom side, as well as the hard drive, CDrom/DVD and access covers. Flip back over an reinstall the hinge cover.
Reinstall the battery and reconnect power. Enjoy!

The whole process took about a half hour for me. Went from a T8300 to a T9500. Sweet...

Took the T8300 from the above Dell Inspiron 1520 and dropped it into a Dell Vostro 1500. Of course the second CPU swap was much easier than the first. And the Vostro has the integrated video, so the Heat Sink assembly is really easy to remove. BTW this one had a spider corpse on the CPU area of the heat sink. Probably crawled in for some warmth and got toasted at the next boot up.

With a little effort you can add some life to your aging Dell Laptop.

Had another CPU left over, so with another half hour invested, the Vostro 1500 now has a T9300 installed. Moving from a T7250 to the T9300 really makes this Laptop come alive. The Wprime times drop from 42 seconds to 30... And the T9300 runs a little cooler as an added benefit.

Nice upgrade! I'm fine with my T7500.. the only time(s) I max is when I'm playing games. I see no reason to invest in a new CPU right now, I'd rather put the money towards my desktop build fund.

Fair enough. I posted because 1) I ended up with a good upgrade CPU and 2) most of the searches indicated that the Laptop was not upgradeable. So it implied that you are stuck with what you bought. I was delighted to find out that ths was not true and that you can breath some good life into these Laptops.

    Hello,

I've had this problem for a while and it's really starting to hamper my ability to watch cool documentaries on my living room couch!

Basically, I have this Inspiron 1520 laptop with a VGA port I use to hook up to my TV.

    Vista SP1 32-bit
    Core2 Duo 2.2gHz
    2GB RAM
    GeForce 8600M GT

I use the Windows Mobility Center to connect the display which gives me the option of changing resolution, and whether the display is mirrored, extended, or monitor-off. That was until the fateful day some button was pushed that ended my dual-monitor glory.

Now, when I connect the VGA cable and initiate the connection via Control Panel Display or Windows Mobility Center, my monitor goes black. The TV display flickers black and gray, with no semblance of a computer input. This also causes my computer to enter a state that cannot be undone by waiting 15 seconds for the settings to revert, or pressing keys, or alt-f4/ctrl+alt+del. It requires me to hold down the power button and do a hard reset on the whole damn thing.

I have tried setting everything back to default values, installing new drivers, and nothing seems to help.

Is my VGA port somehow dead? Because I can't ascertain why it's acting completely nonfunctional.
